I started coughing about a week prior to my surgery. I never did get any type of recognizable illness, but I still had the cough on the day of surgery. They still did the surgery. I have to tell you though that every time I coughed after the surgery, I had to put a pillow to my stomach and boy did it hurt. Fortunately the coughing only lasted another day or so.

If your coughing is very frequent and continual, you might want to postpone...but I'd definitely let your doctor know.
