HI - i am patiently waiting for my surgical date - but i had a question for all of you bandsters... for anyone who had / has GERD .... and takes/took Nexium ... were you able to stop you medication after surgery ? My surgeon told me that i would not need it after surgery , but that scares me since i currently take it 2x's a day and if i were to stop now the vomiting would be horrible .... please let me know your experiences.....

Before surgery I was taking Prilosec, which is like Nexium only it is available over the counter. I don't have GERD, just acid reflux. After surgery my surgeon put me on Prilosec for another month in order to avoid ulcers. I am not sure if I will need to continue taking it or not after the first month. It seems that every doctor is different though.

I was worried about that too, I used to get bad heartburn. So far I haven't had any, but I don't eat right before bed either. However I had my prescription of Nexium redone to the oral solution, just in case! They are packets of granules you mix with Water instead of having to take the pill. I've found that most of my meds were easily changed to liquids or chewables actually, I was quite surprised! But anyways I haven't had to use one dose yet. Crossing my fingers!

My Doctor wanted me to stop taking the Nexium because he says taking it could mask band problems. It seems sometimes reflux can be a symptom of a band problem and he wants to be aware of it so he can treat it. I was on Nexium for years and thought I couldn't do without it. Now it is a wonderful thing not having to take it...No problems on the band end so far.....

Been Nexium free since 8/26/09 (date of procedure). I was on Nexium for years. I was also afraid of not taking it after surgery, but haven't had anything no Gerd or reflux.

I also was taking Nexium daily before surgery. Afterwards I took it for two days and it made me sick to my stomach so I quit taking it. My surgeon said that was good sign and my PCP did too. Had no problems since then either. Sad part is I had just gotten a 90 day refill a couple weeks before surgery on May 1st. Oh well it was worth it. You may experience the same thing after your surgery.

I stopped taking Nexium the day after my surgery. (Sept. 4) I just started having heart burn this last week so I got it refilled. I'm able to take it in pill form no problems. I might call my Dr. to see if this is normal. I also have had a slight stomach ache all week. Hope nothing is wrong.

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
