I would love feed back on this. Typically with diets that are kind of drastic - you tend to see Hair loss - it might be temporary - but have any of you noticed this? Or is there something special we should make sure we have to make sure we have enough nutrients to minimize this?

I know in the past when ive dieted, ive seen stands of hair come out..and while that is normal to an extent...i would like to do everything i can to minimize this.

Thanks for your insight!

I've never experienced that on any of my diets.

Hope that doesn't happen on this weight loss journey!

I understand Hair loss can be a problem 3-4 months into the band. From what I gather it is from lack of Protein. I am 2 months out and I make sure I get at least 50 grams of protein everyday and have had no problems....

I was very nervous about this happening to me. I was told if you are eating enough Protein and taking your Vitamins, you should be okay. I have not yet experienced this and I hope I dont. Good luck to you.

Well I have pretty thick hair to begin with, and I am a blonde so I have always shed a lot of hair. BUT since my surgery in March my hair has seemed to thinned out a bit, nothing drastic. I mean I am not missing huge chunks of hair anywhere. But there has been a notice in the thickness of my ponytail and stuff. I eat plenty of Protein, I drink protein bullets and focus strictly on my Proteins. I take my Vitamins most of the time as well. Some people say that its actually an effect from the anesthesia, rather than a Vitamin or mineral deficiency. I don't know which to believe. I was told that whatever loss may happen, does grow back.

I believe that I am at the "height" of thinning.

When I shower the drain is full of my hair. I'm not going to lie - it makes me a tad nervous.

They say it grows back....but when?

(Thank god I had heavy thick hair to start with!)

I, too, have very thick hair and lose a significant amount at all times. However, since being banded 3 mos. ago the amount I am losing has gotten a lot worse. I asked my hairstylist about it--she said the hair follice is actually an exit for toxins leaving the body--be it medications or those lost from wt. loss can cause Hair loss. Good news! Only temporary and the hair will grow back. Last week when I last saw my surgeon I asked him as well. He said they don't usually see significant hair loss in banded pts. mostly with bypass pts. He said it is caused by a change in our metabolism and is NOT a nutritional deficiency as would be the case in bypass. It is basically that the wt. loss is a shock to our systems and again temporary and will grow back! :)

Your surgeon or dietician should have gone over this with you as it's apparently a pretty common thing when people don't get enough Protein. My nutritionist at my doc's office told me that to avoid the Hair loss you need to be taking in at least 70g of protein a day, at an absolute minimum. Of course ask your doc in the event he'd like you to have more per day based on your bmi.

I always had at least 100 grams of Protein a day and I still lost hair. It stopped for a while and now 9 months out I noticed it again recently. I did recently have my gallbladder out and I was told that anesthesia can sometimes effect the body in different ways and I think this could be why I noticed it happening again. It is normal and it will grow back. Don't be surprised.

Yep, going through it right now. Thankfully I had really thick hair to begin with, but it is very thin (for me) now. My best friend and fiance have noticed it, but no one else.

My hair started shedding about 2wks after the surgery. I am now about 3 mos post op and at the "height". I hope it will taper off soon. I'm convinced it's from the anesthesia. I've gotten plenty of Protein, Vitamins and Biotin daily. Biotin is supposed to help w/ Hair loss. Who knows if my hair loss would have been worse if I weren't taking it. No one except me has noticed yet. My recommendation is get enough Protein, take your Vitamins and try not to worry. Stress could make it worse.

Good luck!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞
