I had a feeling something was just not right. I have had my band 11 months and about 4 weeks ago I had an episode for 2 days on and off where my port site hurt. I had vomitted (not PB) 3 times while I had a stomach bug that lasted less than 12 hours. I have 3 cc in my 12 cc band and had my last fill in Febuary but felt no new restriction after that fill. So, now I am wondering if it was flipped then. Anyway, my MD said this is extremely rare and happens less than 1% of all cases done. I will have surgery on Thursday. Is there anyone out there who is in this less than 1% club with me and if so, how was the recovery after?

wow. i'm not part of the 1% just wanted to say sorry about whats happened and hope your surgery goes well.

Haven't been there (thank goodness) but I would imagine recovery would be the same or less than the original surgery, and likely without the all liquid restriction, etc. since they aren't doing anything to your stomach. I've heard they really anchor it down if they have to do anything to it after it's first placed, so it might be a little more sore than after your first surgery. Good luck, and keep us posted!

i had a flipped port had surgery in march and it wasnt that bad. im dont understand what vomiting has to do with a flipped port though? i couldnt get any fills tried about three times with x rays and ultrasounds but no luck so my doctor suggested of surgery to fix the port. pretty much i excerise alot so my muscles popped my stitches that were holding the port in place. so he went in and use some mesh and connected to my muscles so that my muscles can grow around and through it so i shouldnt ever have a problem with that ever again hopefully.... surgery wasnt bad at all and recovery time was pretty quick i dont remember feeling any pain the first day just really tired. and it took about a week to be able to do bend over and such. i wasnt suppose to do excerise for 4 weeks but i was back in the gym in less then a week. im fine now and havent had any problems whatsoever and actually got a fill for the first time in like 5 months last month.

I didn't have a flipped port, but had to have my port moved about a month ago. My surgeon said that he wouldn't have to go through the muscle, so the surgery should be reasonably easy. It was scheduled for 1:00, 30 minutes in and out and home by 6pm. He was right, the surgery was easy and recovery was not a problem. I did have two complications, but that is not the norm.

I'm in the 1%. I went in today for a fill under fluoro (first one since mid-january - been banded almost a year) and after a lot of prodding was told my port flipped. I am scheduled for surgery for first thing in the am tomorrow. My doc said that sometimes exercise can cause it to come loose but that it can also be caused by trauma. In my case, I think it was the latter. I fell down a flight of concrete stairs in late January and fell on my left side. I broke my thumb and ripped the nail clean off my finger and was bruised in pain for weeks. My doc asked me today if when I fell if it hurt on my left side in my abdomen. I was like duh...my entire body was in pain after that...but yes, specifically my left side. Needless to say, I am guessing thats what caused it.

Can someone tell me if they have to take all the Fluid out of the band when they fix the port? I really dont want to start at square one again - although I guess I should be thankful that is the least of my problems.

I am also wondering if since i fell down the stairs at work and all my doctors and hospital bills associated with that were paid by workers comp if workers comp would have to pay for this as well (I'm kinda half kidding about this but if it is flipped due to my fall shouldnt they have to pay? my insurance is excellent and im lucky that i have it but if i dont have to pay the copays every little bit helps).

I had my surgery on 6/18/09 and I was supposed to have my first fill on 7/15/09. After trying for some time... the doctor told me that my port was flipped. I am now waiting for the insurance company to approve the "port revision" surgery (which should only take a few days I'm told). I should be able to schedule the new surgery any day now. I was really excited about getting my band surgery, but I am just plain scared about this one. I had never had any surgeries prior to band surgery and now I have to have another one.

How did your surgery go? How long was your recovery? Any insight you can give me would be appreciated.

My port revision surgery was fine.....but I had my surgeon to add 1 cc during surgery to bring me up to 4cc in a 12 cc band.....well apparently I swell more than the average person during any type of surgery so the 1 cc along with the swelling was too much. I would recommend not getting a fill at the same time as surgery. Best wishes for a speedy recovery!

I had port revision surgery in March and it was easy. Since my surgeon did not have to go through the muscle, recovery was a few days and then back to normal! My biggest problem was that I reacted to the pain meds in recovery and then the meds given to counter that were a problem, too....

I have a cousin that lives in Grapevine!

I am in that 1% also. I went in for my first fill on 7/30/09. After much poking and prodding, I was sent to flouro and the doc did more poking and prodding with no success. I had to go in for port repositioning surgery on 7/31/09. He also did a fill at the same time (don't know how much fill he put in). My personal experience is that the pain level this time is more intense. One good thing is that is it only in one area instead of the entire abdomon. Not sure if the pain is worse because of the combination of all the poking & prodding the day before surgery.

My port is NOT flipped after all!! :biggrin: I had been waiting for the insurance company to approve a "port revision" surgery after being told by one of my doctors that my port was flipped. After almost 2 weeks one of the girls in the office told me that the other surgeon in the office would like to see me and told me that he was confident that he would be able to get to my port. I decided to go ahead and let him try... HE GOT IT ON THE FIRST TRY!!! :biggrin: I don't know why the other surgeon had so much trouble.

Anyways, I now have 3cc's in my band and I do feel a little more restriction. I go back in 2 weeks for another fill.

I am so happy that I don't have to have another surgery!!! Thank you to my new doctor!!!
