my doc plans on starting me on pureed foods in the hospital. anybody else? it makes me nervous because i've heard from so many they use liquids for days if not weeks following the surgery. also he said no fills for 6wks, is that normal? i know that normal is relative but i'm just curious what your experiences have been.

Hi Thin- I'm sorry I don't know anything about going straight to pureed. But I'm curious as to when you're going to Disney. We're going to Disneyworld 9/26-10/2. My 5 yr old is so excited as are we!

we are going 11/29-12/6 we were there in late jan/early feb too. Decided we enjoyed it enough to go back again at the end of the year. I am very excited about it! Where are you going to stay? Are you taking advantage of the free dining offer? (Not sure if it is during that time or not) We are stayng at Pop Century, we stayed there last time and really liked it.

We're staying at the cheaper All Star Music. All of my sisters are going so we have to work with several different budgets. Plus several of us need Family Suites. Unfortunately there wasn't free dining offered. I've been to Disney several times, every time I've been I've had a great time, service, room, etc.

Hi. like you said, normal is a relative term. just to let you know my experience: all liquid diet 2 weeks pre op and 2 weeks post op - first fill 4 weeks post op - no exceptions.

i was banded april 1st. i stopped eating 3/17 and can have mushy foods starting 4/15. post op appointment yesterday couldn't have gone any better. incisions healing well, constipation relieved after 5 days, (Miralax is amazing albeit sluggish) first fill May 1st.

i admit, of all the posts i've read, and we've all read a lot here, i've never read where you start on mushy foods immediately post op. my Dr. is most concerned with everything adhering and scar tissue forming and everything "sticking" before we start pushing food through the band. he even takes a part of the stomach and puts a stitch around the band just to be sure. he's done thousands and thousands of bands.

so, i think you have the right to ask your dr. why his protocol is different. good luck

I've been to Disney 7x. And though I know it like the back of my hand I always pick up the current Birbaum's book. He puts one out each year. It is the Disney bible. For example we went for christmas 2006--I had to make the dinner reservations in July 2006. My daughter and son read it and made a couple of special requests. Like horse back riding. We used the meal plan and it was great--everything prepaid was so sweet. We plan to go again in 3 years-though I'd go sooner.

I recommend the book to everyone.

well i am in the uk and i have to stick to liquids only for 4 weeks post op then puree for 4 weeks before starting to try 'real' food. i havent got an appointment till first week in june for clinic to book my first fill i had my band fitted 30th March and am begining to hate the site of soup and slimfast drinks, i occasionally have jelly to get a slightly different texture in my mouth - i have only heard of anyone having pureed food when they have had very bad diarear (sorry cant spell it) i go with the other posters and would ask your surgeon why he is putting you straight onto pureed foods

I am 2 weeks liquid (anything that will go up straw)

then 1 week very mushy

then 1 week chunky mushy

then solids.

Its to stop the pouch getting over filled and pulling on the stiches that are holding your band in place. To be fair though, I am 8 days post op and I have been eating food that wouldn't quite fit up a straw, you just have to be VERY careful with portion sizes so that it doesn't stretch on the stitches.

Have a chat with Surgeon anyway if you are worried. xx

I agree with Knewme. I would ask the doctor why is his/her protocol different. I have never heard of anyone going straight to puree. be careful and good luck to you.:drool:

I'm on clear liquids for 2 weeks till I see the Dr. very disapointing I was really looking forward to a protien shake and some cream or tomato soup.

ThinWithin - I am NOT a Dr. however IMHO, I would be concerned with the puree foods right off the bat. Your band needs time to heal and the scar tissue needs to form. Plus, you don't want to stretch your pouch. If you stretch your pouch, it WILL NOT SHRINK BACK. Only more surgery will reshape the size of your pouch. I know that the liquid diet is not fun, but if I were you, I would stick to a liquid diet for the first couple weeks. Not only that eating foods to early on is what can cause a band to slip. You may not feel or see the effects of the damage early on, but a few years down the road.....To me the risk is to great to mess around with.

I have read Lap Band for Life, and a whole ton of literature from the net and other sources. All of which indicate a liquid diet. You would be wise to call your surgeons office and double check with him.

I did one day clear liquids, 2 weeks full liquids, 2 weeks mushie stage.

Hi All,

I had to do 48 hours of clear liquid post op. Now I'm past that stage, so I am on 1 week of what they call "full liquids". It's all of the clear liquids (broth, decaf hot tea, decaf cold tea, Isopure Protein Water, water, sugar free Jello and popsicles) plus, I can add: pudding, flan, yogurt, very thin oatmeal or cream of wheat, or very diluted mashed potatoes. They encourage adding Protein powder to just about anything palatable!

I've found that the Isopure 40 Gram of Protein Water in "grape frost" isn't too bad. The mango peach was retchid. ICK!

What is everyone else eating?

Doc told me clear liquids until I see him for my 2 week follow-up disappointing because I was lookiing forward to the creamed and tomato soups and some protein shakes. I've been having some broth, popcicles, fudgecicles (propably cheating but need the creamy texture) and water I made some Jello that will probably be dinner. I'm going to double check with the nutrionist when she calls to make sure I didn't misunderstand but he clearly said no soup till follow-up I would figure that meant tomato and cream of....

I can't wait for the mushy stage. 3 more days.

2 weeks CLEAR liquids post-op, then mushies.
