Hello everyone I'm 11 days post-op(banded 1/16/09). I just started mushies on this past sat 1/24/09. I've always drank coffee about 2 cups a day. I stopped smoking 4 months pre-op it then went up to about 5-6 cups a day. One month pre-op I just stopped. I had some light craving but I was watching everything my fats, carbs,no sugar and working out and everything was all good. During my 2 week pre-op liquid diet and 1 week post-op liquid diet still good. I had my first mushed egg sat morning and went out for my mile walk and every house I walked by I could smell coffee so I walked on and just thought is was funny. Later that day I went into the local 7-11 to pay for gas and OH MY GOD!!!. I had to run out the store due the STRONG SMELL of COFFEE. Sunday I went for my walk and the same thing happend, the whole mile as I walked I couldn't stop thinking about the 7-11 smell. On Monday I walked at a later time not as early and I didn't smell anything but could no stop thinking about STARBUCHS COFFEE. I Just got back from my mile walk and it was all good until I opend the door to my house and my wife saying " oh baby I'm sorry LUA YA bye" as she walked by with a 12 ounce cup of fresh brewed Starbuchs Classic Roast and the smell in my house as strong as the 7-11. I going crazy right now but I'm holding out. I'm told by my Dr NO COFFEE! My question being only 11 days post-op and everything is going so well (lost 5 pounds). CAN I HAVE A CUP OF COFFEE?

PS: I need some help setting my personal info up!

Oh my. I drank anywhere from 3 cups up to 6 cup of coffee per day for the last 25yrs. I was banded on 12/29/08 and have not had a cup since until today. I went to store this morning and bought de-caf and I am on my first cup as I write. I drank alot of diet pepsi all my life also. But after my surgery, I have just not had any cravings at all for either. I only bought this de-caf because I seen it was on sale this morning so I decided to come home and fix me a pot. I wish these were my only problems though. I have had no problem with the surgery at all and I have lost about 20lbs since having it. But, I still am able to eat much more than I am suppose to have with no problem at all. Of course I am not eating nor do I think I could if I wanted to eat as much as I did before banding but I know I am eating much much more than what I should be. I am looking forward to my first fill next week. Hopefully that will get me on track and start really losing. Good luck with your coffee craving. Just think of it as mind over matter. Ha.

I was told we aren't supposed to have coffee because the acidity can cause ulcers... I honestly dont know if I will be able to stick to 100% no coffee

Perhaps just severely limited :cursing:

Just as long as it is de-caf is what I was told. I have been totally without any caf. for the whole 4 weeks. I know it affects different people differently but I have done just fine without it.

I was never put on coffee restriction. In fact i drank a skinny iced latte from starbucks after i came home from surgery.

I was not given a caffeine restriction either. I only drank Decaf beverages prior to surgery (for about the past 4-1/2 years). Now I drink iced tea, hot tea and coffee (all with caffeine).

Supposedly the caffeine can stimulate insulin production and increase hunger. My surgeon also has a strict no caffeine rule. I have a "it is my only vice so I'm gonna drink it" rule. I have had coffee from day 4 on. I even have a venti non-fat caramel mocha (2 pumps mocha, sf caramel) almost every day.

Still, you should ask your doctor what he/she thinks, and ask why.

Thanks Everybody!! My Dr/dietitian staff stated that the caffeine slowed the healing process and I'm restricted for 2/wks or until my 1st post-op appt and thats Friday 1/30/09 I don't think I can make it. BTW the healing seem to be going very well.

It is good to hear the healing is going well for you. I hear so many complaints from others how bad they are doing with it. I have been banded for 4 weeks now and I have had no problems at all. So much that until I went to see my surgeon a week after surgery I had to ask if everything is alright because I just did not expect to feel so good so soon after surgery. Yes, I had a little strain around my port area when I got up, coughed, laughed etc. but it was really nothing compared to what I thought I was going to have. I just feel physically great and have really all along the way. Have only lost the 20 and I blame myself for that because I feel I eat to much but I get filled next week.

Thanks Weaver I'm feeling great and has since 3 hrs post-op, having to get up to give an x-ray. I said is this it? My wife told me I was moving to fast but I had very little pain. I walk 1/2 mile on the day I got released. Doing a mile in the morning now and about 45 min of cardio in the evening and feel fine I'm like LETS GO LETS GET IT ON!!!

I was told I could have coffee, both regular and Decaf. The catch for me is that the regular coffee does not count towards my 64oz of required liquid per day. I have a cup of regular in the morning to "get me going" and if I want more through the day I choose the decaf.

Im 5 days post op, and feeling great!

Good luck!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞
