Hello everyone my name is Renee and I am having my surgery tomorrow. My question is after surgery I will move on to "full liquid" diet...what are some things that you ate during this period? Then I will move to the "mushy stage" what are some things you had during this time? I just need some ideas and I am starving now:cry_smile:! Someone please let me know that there is light at the end of the tunnel. What can I look forward to having in the next few weeks? Clear broth is killing me:frown:. Thanks for any input! January 9th, 09 surgery day

I had to have clear liquids for 1 week post op (and that meant NO protein shakes either) then 1 week full liquids. IS that what you have to do?

I hate to tell you this, but there is not a lot of variety for the first 2-3 weeks post op. And the hunger will continue until you get restriction, which could take months (for sum not till the 4th fill!

I am starving. My op was 12/22. I did clear liquids week 1, full liquids week 2-3, which was cottage cheese, yogurt, creamed Soup, and oatmeal. I am in week three, and they added bean Soups and 4-6 crackers. I am looking forward to next week when I can have pureed foods like liverworst and egg salad.

Unfortunately, since you will be starving, as the foods get more solid, so goes you will power, and often weight starts to come back on until restriction is good.

Sorry to be the voice of reason. There are others who don't experience this. I wish I would have known before I would have months of hunger and food boredom, along with weight fluctuation.

Yes there is light at the end of the tunnel, but everyone is different. If you're like me, you will enjoy about 2 weeks of no hunger at all! It was great. Once I moved on to the mushy stage I felt the hunger a bit more, but nothing unmanageable. I have had little problem keeping my calories between 800-1000 on most days.

During full liquids I drank a lot of Protein shakes and they really filled me up, especially since I was sipping them pretty much all day and night long. I like Myoplex Original the best. I also sipped tomato soup, broth from Top Ramen (way better than canned or packet broth), other broth-based soups (homemade are the best) and drank soy milk (filling). Also, pick up some Kelloggs protein Water. You get 5 grams of protein and while you're drinking water.

There is light... lots of light. I feel your pain. I was banded December 10th, so a month ago I was just where you are. Starving! Hang in there.

Drink some Special K Protein Water if you are allowed. Drinking protein will help with the hunger pangs. Stay hydrated. That also helps with the hunger pangs.

As far as what to eat after surgery, I would definitely follow what you have been told by the surgeons office. I am on mushies now. For lunch I today I had tuna salad, pulverized in the mini-food chopper.

Full liquids can include ---cooked refined cereals; farina, grits, oatmeal, cream of rice, cream of wheat, soy milk, sugar-free custard, sugar-freepudding. I would DEFINITELY

check with your doctor.

Sorry if I sounded cynical (sp?}. This is what happens when you are tired and hungry. My dietician made me start eating more and I stopped loosing weight. And I am more hungry than before:sad_smile:.

I am going to endulge in a special K Protein Water, because they really do help.

Dispite everything you might read or hear during the rough times, I have yet to hear anyone say it wasn't worth it. Good luck!

I put photos up on my blog of all of the stuff I had for my post-op full liquid diet. I also made or bought soups and put them through the blender, which worked just fine. One of the best things I made was a Breakfast treat -- I'd blend some cottage cheese with a little skim milk and throw in a banana to make a smoothie -- yum!! After being on clear liquids for several days, that was amazingly delicious!

For the liquids phase, I stuck to chicken broth, jello, and water mainly. I froze some little dixie cups of Crystal Light Lemonade too (or you can buy popsicles).

I also had to have 3 protein shakes a day (which I made with 2% milk because I found it had more protein than 1%, skim, and even soy milk.) For the first couple of weeks I wasn't hungry at all. Third week gets rougher, but there isn't too much more variety until mushy foods.

I was eating mashed potatoes and sweet potatoes, yum. I'd recommend making them yourself though, because when I bought them they were waaay too salty. Also I had some fish, tilapia's really good, salmon too, and tofu. For the rest you can just blend stuff. I started boiling some veggies in chicken broth for flavor, or otherwise you can do them in water obvs, and then blending them. Scrambled eggs with a little cheese, as long as they were more on the runny side. My mushy phase was only a week, and I can't remember much more than that, sorry! Soups are good though, but my dr recommended I blend them again anyway, even if everything was well cooked.

Good Luck on your surgery! I had mine on Dec. 30th. All I ate for the first 7 days were chicken/beef broth, brotein shakes, and yogurt. Oh, and lots of Water. That week sucked cause I was dizzy and tired. Now I am on my second week and eating creamy soups, applesauce, yogurt, v8 juice. The other night I had mashed potatos and I felt so gross. But the good news is, I am not dizzy anymore.

Well every doctor has different post-op instructions. Here is what my doctor instructed.

Week 1: Clear liquids, which include Isopure Protein drinks

Week 2; Full liquids includes cream Soups, yogurts, and milk

Week 3: Mushies: All of the above with pudding, oatmeal, mashed potatos, ect.

Week 4: Full diet very slowly introduce all food types, but chew really well.
