May walking challenge

OK, maggots, get out your pedometers! I have been sorta sluggish over the last couple of months, still recovering from back pain and sciatica. But I'm tired of sitting around. So I got new walking shoes and a new pedometer, and even though I'm still on the slow side, I am ready to rumble.

I'm thinking: let's try to walk 7500 steps a day for the month of May. Anyone with me? Check in at this thread any time. I will check in each Monday.

If you're looking for a low-tech way to get some exercise, this might work for you. And if 7500 steps seems too much -- that's a little over three miles a day with my stride -- do whatever you can. If you haven't used a pedometer, consider getting one; you'll be surprised at how much ground you can cover just by expanding your usual routine a little bit: walking up stairs instead of taking the elevator, for example.

I'm ready to break that 200-lb. barrier, and you undoubtedly have milestones of your own. So let's get a move on!

Hello Maggots, I haven't reported, because I have been really bad, too much going on to devote an hour just for myself. This is a busy time of season for me, my girls are getting ready for year end dance recital. My four year old is a tumble tyke and she is dancing the itsy bitsy teenie weenie yellow polka dot bikini (super cute) and my nine year old takes ballet/tap/jaz and baton, so whe will have four numbers this year, she has worked really hard all year and is doing really good. I'm so proud of both of them. And if that wasn't enough they have joined a competitive cheer team and are starting next week, so have been super busy w/ that. fundraising is mandatory, so I have been irritaing people asking for $. It is good excercise for them, and I like them to be involved in extra curricular activities, but it gets overwhelming sometimes. I am sure you all can relate. Well and I'm off to St. Augustine, FL for a field trip w/ my daughters school for two days, so I'll be doing a lot of sightseeing. So can I count that as my part of the challenge? Well I'm sorry to make this post so long, but I just had to let you all know what's going on w/ me and why I'm not keeping up w/ ya gals. Have a wonderful weekend, I'll be in touch on MOnday. Leaving in the am at 4:30, yikees.

How far is 7500 steps in mileage? Just curious.....
That depends on how long your stride is. For me (a long-legged but very slow 5'9") it's about three miles. Some pedometers, like my $15 Timex, will convert steps to miles at the touch of a button. Some have to be programmed with your exact stride length. Some won't make the calculation at all.

Anyone is welcome to join the challenge at any time. Thanks for walking with me! I got home from class at 9:30 last night and walked for an hour because I fell behind on Monday. I'm so glad I got a move on -- I felt great afterward.

Penni, how's your foot?

Day Three of the steppers-set...Here are my stats:

5/09 - 1 mile

5/10 - 1 mile

5/11 - 3/4 mile it's raining really bad this morning (Chicago)

I actually did 1.6 miles on the treadmill today, yippee! I've been in a funk this week, so I MADE myself go, and felt better! Tomorrow I'm wearing the pedometer all day. I'll check in.

Penni, how's your foot?

MY FOOT HURTS!!!!!!!!!!! LOL!!! I find it hard to just walk from the bathroom to the bedroom at times. Then other times it doesn't hurt at all. Now to make things worse, I stubbed the second toe on my good foot. So I limp on both sides now. LOL!!!!

Had the MRI this past Tuesday. No results yet.

I am calling the doc tomorrow to see if they know anything but I doubt they do. I will keep you posted.

7500 steps for me is 3 miles.

Hello, checking in. I started my walking this week here are my stats:

Monday 5/9 - (had no step counter yet) I walked 1.5 miles though in 30 minutes.

Thursday 5/12 (still no step counter) I walked 1 mile in 25 minutes

Friday 5/13 (got step counter but forgot to wear it duh...) walked 1.5 miles in 30 mins.

Have a great day!

Man, have I been a bad, bad college gurl... It was finals this week... But I'm done so I can go buy that new Crystal-proof pedomiter after work today. (assuming there is no class...)

Well, my sciatica has returned, so I've been a slug for the last few days. Yesterday the orthopod said I can get steroid injections into my spine instead of taking the oral meds that make me hungry. Off to the pain clinic next week. . . meanwhile, I'm stoned on Vicodin, and there is a silver lining: I don't have much appetite.

Sorry, maggots. But I will get back on the trail as soon as I can!

Okay here are my totals for the week:

Sun- Forgot to put on my pedometer oops

Mon- 9494 steps

Tues-9265

Wed-6832

Thur-11,092

Fri-5002

Sat- 5492

I can tell you that I have not lost 1 pound since I started walking more but, I've gone from a tight size 22 to a loose size 20. That works for me!!

okay, I bought an new pedometer yesterday.

Took a walk, went shopping, bla bla bla. Recorded steps? 58. Maybe I need to take smaller steps? :D

So much for my Crystal-proof pedometer.

  • 2 weeks later...

Hi all,

I am joining in here. Don't have a pedometer, but two routes that I walk are 1.8km one way and the other 2.2km one way, I will aim to do one of these (return obviously every day.

Cheers

Jodie
