For those that had a hiatal hernia, Did you know before surgery or was it found out during surgery? Ive been curious on it because for the last year or so i have had center chest pain (very top of my stomach) and wondering if that could be it. Shall see if the surgeon finds anything in 9 days. thats one thing i forgot to ask about. as for this pre op diet... Day 6 is almost done and the hunger has subsided and its getting easier.

Mine was discovered during surgery, and was a very large hernia, so I'd been living with it for a long time. It explains a lot: the reflux, the discomfort I'd feel after eating a big meal right under the ribs, etc.

That said, pain in that region could also be gallstones (though that's typically a little over to your right side), or an ulcer. I've had all three.

Mine was discovered during the routine pre-op tests. I knew something was there because I had acid reflux and other hernias before. They were surprised the hernia was all the way up to my larynx. I think the recovery took longer because of the repair, the surgery was 7 hours due to it with the RNY. No regrets now that I can lie down flat to sleep, and sing again!

Hi!
I'm also getting a hiatus hernia repair and gastric bypass at the same time, I've had my hernia for several years and I've not had that pain as you described rather I've had a lot of acid reflux if I had anything to eat a couple of hours before bedtime, even water! and it will rush up with acid burning my oesophagus so badly, I would be sitting up all night, awake! As soon as my inner organs whent into sleep mode the acid would rush up its teribble! I only take small sips of Water when I go to bed to avoid the acid reflux trigger, hopefully with this surgery that'll all go away, my surgery is due on the 27th of April, scared but excited and enthusiastic at the same time [emoji4] well hopefully most of my problems will have gone when I lose the weight [emoji1696][emoji1696][emoji120][emoji120][emoji120]

The hiatal hernia was where the oesophagus passes through the diaphram, your stomach is supposed to be below your diaphram (google will explain it better). I have had my op, when the surgeon was in there he spotted a hernia, a ‘bit of a gap’ he said, and put a stitch in the gap to repair the hernia before he did the sleeve. Weirdly I have photos taken during the procedure that show the stitch near the top of my newly sleeved, stapled stomach.

Have a great Wednesday too! Sorry you're hungry all the time, I'm pretty much the same..and I'm sick of eating the same food all the time.

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!

Having gall bladder surgery in a few days and I so hope the recovery is easier than the one from the modified DS! I could use a bit of luck/pep talk for a change. I'm starting to be able to walk around without experiencing dizziness, but it would be great if the random pain in my chest and abdomen would go away!!
