  • 8 days for me. You better start taking some stool softener today. When I finally did have a BM it was like delivering a couple of large rocks...TWINS! Not fun.

I had one the morning after. They wouldn’t count that one and told me to continue with laxatives..... which then gave me diarrhea the next day. Then they told me to go OFF the laxatives and I have now settled into one every 4-5 days. (I’m 2.5 weeks post op). Thus far I have not noticed any constipation. Before surgery my schedule was actually every 3-4 days so it’s not drastically different

Wow, this was actually a discussion point with my nurse post-op. I was on a two week liquid diet and hadn't had a BM since 4 days prior to surgery on a Wednesday, still nothing by that Sunday. Miralax did the trick to get things going. I was really worried but didn't feel bloated or constipated, so I wasn't too worried. It was another 5 days and had my first 'unassisted' BM. I think we're all different, especially after surgery, so just try to stay hydrated and be patient. And of course call you Dr's office if you're really worried.

it can take up to a week. You don't have much in there, plus your body is still waking up from the anesthesia. Be forewarned that the first BM can be a doozy. Some clinics recommend you take things like Miralax or stool softeners to help with that, but check with yours first to see if it's OK....

I also had hernia repair and I'm scared of the straining, I was allowed miralax or milk of magnesia so I'm thinking of taking some so I won't have to strain.

It was about a week, and I needed to take something to move it along...

Yeah that doesn't sound fun. I'll start taking some now.

No...And I had been taking stool softener for several days at that point and still do take them.
