So my husband is just beginning the process towards weight loss surgery. I've been considering having it done along with him. For those couples here that have done the same, how much time passed between each of your your surgeries?

My wife had WLS in 2012. She lost over 350 pounds. She then had several reconstructive plastic surgeries. So far so good. Unfortunately once she had a new body she decided to get a new guy too. This doesn't seem to be unusual. I've read that over 85% of couples split after WLS.

Finding myself newly single I decided to have WLS surgery myself. So far I'm down about 90 pounds. A little over five years between our surgeries. Sorry, I know this is probably not the type of outcome you were hoping to hear about.

Wow! 85% is crazy! We have yo yo'd up and down together for many years. We will both be more successful if we do this together.

I guess what I'm asking is if we're both going to have the WLS, how much care will he need after his surgery? At what point will he be doing well enough to help me after the same surgery?

That's an easier question. I was up and about after 10 days and went back to work after two weeks.

Did they need someone to drive them home and help around the house after the surgeries?

He’s ahead of me in the process. I haven’t even discussed this with my primary yet so I don’t think we would have them the same day but I wanted to be aware of how long I should wait to get mine, if I should go ahead with it.

Yes, someone had to drive them home but that's standard for any surgery (at least, every surgery I've ever had). The wife went back to work after 4 days, and the hubby took two or three weeks off. They didn't really require much help. They have teenage kids, so I'm sure they helped some but not much.

I talked to my surgeon about the pain level, and he said it's nothing like what I experienced with my C-sections so I think hubby and I will be fine post op.

My wife got a sleeve Nov 24. I got mine on Dec 20. We figured it was enough apart to take care of each other. It's gone well so far, almost a month out for me.

My hubby and I had ours about 2 weeks apart. We could have had them 2 days apart but were hesitant- our case manager told us that we’d be fine 2 days apart but with 4 kids and Christmas time we didn’t want to both be down. We would have been fine with the 2 days apart and had no issues with the 2 weeks. It does make it easier to keep it close when it comes to food stages. We are now lil over a year out and I’m down 153 from my highest and about 10-20 pounds to my ultimate goal. Loving life in my new smaller body. Hubby hasn’t done as well as he didn’t work past what the surgery will do but he’s off his diabetes meds so that’s a success in itself.

Thanks all. I think it’s good that we would be having it done separately. Our kids are grown and we live alone so we need to take care of each other. I do want us to be on the same page at approximately the same time as far as diet goes. So, having the surgery done apart but not too far apart.

I am having my surgery next month. My husband is bigger than me but is not having surgery. He is not interested. He is not ready to commit to that just yet. I on the hand am so ready for a change and hope our relationship gets stronger. I also hope I can encourage and help my husband lose weight while I do. Good luck to all.

It has been great having him with me during this time.

That’s an awesome result! Were you required by your insurance or surgeon to lose weight before the surgery or were you dieting on your own?

He doesn’t work out and has learned to eat around the sleeve. The surgery will only do so much in terms of weight loss for so long. I’m not perfect and will eat chips or candy here or there but 85-90% of the time I eat on plan and I work out hard 4-5 times a week for 1-1.5 hours.

We had our 1 year post op class this week and it was an eye opener for him on just how little effort he put in and how he needs to re focus before it’s too late.

My husband had his done 11-30-17 mine is scheduled for 1-25-18. He’s lost 50lbs so far.
