Have a look at the photo from the October 1, 2007 edition of "Time." It shows Obama, Hillary and Bill Richardson at the Steak Fry of Sen. Tom Harkin (D-Iowa) on September 17 in Indianola, IA during [according to the photo caption] the National Anthem. Richardson and Clinton have their hands on their heart. But not Obama. Does he perhaps believe that, like wearing the flag pin, the hand on the heart isn't "true patriotism"?

I still say Hillary is holding a boob in place and now it appears that Bush is protecting his belly button. That's giving him the benefit of the doubt about the heart location thing.

At least the children in this photo know where their heart is.

I think in either case it's because they don't have a heart, and are unsure of where it's supposed to be.

Nope I am a Govt contractor. I will be doing a year there. I just have to decide when I want to leave. Either Dec or Jan. Probably in January after Christmas or the GF will kill me. I wish I had joined the service when I was younger. Most of my family are former Army and Marines. Who knows I still may one day when the weight thing is fixed totally.

I would like to see a film of this event. Knowing the manipulations of the media, it would not surprise me if it was just the beginning of the anthem or just the end and he either put his hand up a second after the others or put it down a second before.

And if indeed he stood there like that the whole time, are you seriously making those assumptions about his intelligence and motives? Could there possibly be other reasons than those you stated?

My hope is that more and more people question what they're fed by media interests.

Some conservative bloggers are furious about a photo showing Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama without his hand on his heart during the playing of "The Star-Spangled Banner." Obama has countered that the photo was taken during the national anthem, not the Pledge of Allegiance—so he didn't have to. Is that true?

No. According to U.S. law, a civilian like Obama is supposed to stand up when the anthem is played, take off his hat, face the flag, and put his right hand over his heart. Members of the military can keep their hats on and salute instead of placing their hands on their hearts.

The rules of conduct regarding the anthem, the pledge, and the American flag weren't always a matter of law. At first, they were just tradition. "The Star-Spangled Banner" lyrics were originally written during the War of 1812. Later in the 19th century, the Army and Navy both began to use it during ceremonies, but it only became the congressionally recognized national anthem in 1931. Meanwhile, the Pledge of Allegiance was first used in public schools in 1892 to Celebrate Columbus Day and only made it into the law books in the 1940s.

This whole topic was worthless, and a waste of my time. I'm glad a read it anyway - it just reminds me of how low some people will go.

C'mon ya'll. I just read this thread for the first time. Someone just resurected it and it caught my attention.

When was the last time you put your hand over your heart when the National Anthem was played? I was taught in Girl Scouts that you put your hand over your heart during the Pledge of Allegience and when the flag is in motion - during a parade or when bringing it into or when it is leaving a room. One was not required to place their hand over their heart during the National Anthem. Of course that was many years ago, but I think lots of people were taught the same way I was. Obama may have been one of them.

I have been present at military affairs and observed that the military do place their hand over their heart during the National Anthem when they're inside a room. Outside they hold a salute. I believe that Chris's quote was from a military document because it speaks of "saluting" not placing hands over hearts.

Whatever the real expectation is I'm darned glad that I'm not running for president because there would be possibilities of photos all over the place that definitely do not show me with my hand over my heart - football games, basketball games, baseball games and elsewhere. Play ball!!

I think this kind of crap has done Obama much more good than bad. Many of us find ourselves doing our homework and defending the chap. And then there's the bonus of finding a photo of George W. with his hand over his bellybutton. Priceless!
