Mine just handed me a paper with the diet and said “this is basically what you’ll eat for the rest of your life”, and he said with my insurance (Aetna) the process takes 3-4 months to complete and get your date.

I have Aetna and I was required to do a 6 month diet plan.

I have BCBS Texas , but I don’t have a weight loss period. I just have to do EDG, one nutrition appointment and a psych elevation. Then I submit to the insurance. No waiting period.

Exactly my case :)

With AETNA this is not a dieting per se, but a "supervised weight control program", which means you have to follow up on monthly basis either with a professional dietician during a 6 month period, or with a dietician AND a PCP during a 3 month period. During that time you should demonstrate some positive weight loss dynamic - if you lose at least 1-2 lb during that 3-6 months, you are fine and AETNA will clear you for the surgery.
