I had a gastric sleeve two years ago and am hoping to have a Duodenal switch next month. My confusion is the various different options

Traditional DS

Loop DS

SADI

What are the differences? What are the pros and cons for each? Can anyone direct me to a website to find this out as I am just confused

The difference is how much of the intestine is bypassed.

Try a google search. DS is rarely done and there isn't a lot of information about it.

Loop DS, SADI, SADI-s, SIPS are all the same.

Traditional DS is quite different. There are definitely pros & cons to having the traditional DS (I'm 12+ years postop) as I'm sure there are to the Loop DS.

I'm not familiar with the SADI, but the traditional DS (what I have, I've lost over 400lbs) has two anastomoses, bypassing more of the intestines. Obviously, this causes more malabsorption. My common channel, where I absorb, is 150cm.

With the Loop DS, there is one anastomosis, and less malabsorption. It really depends on what works for you. There are few DS surgeons, but that's because few people are thoroughly educated about, it's benefits, etc.

Hi Dannielle Many thanks for posting. I think I am going to go for the DS This is my third surgery an I want to get it right. My biggest concern is that the doctor recommends Low Fat diet and everything I have read from other people who had had the DS is totally the opposite. They say min carbs less than 50 grammes if poss 100-120 grammes of protein little sugar and to a degree as much as you want of fat. Have you found this to be the case? My concerns are the following:-

Drinking - I have the sleeve at the moment and I don't drink - I have never drank will it still be OK with the DS?

Vitamin Regin - Is it really literally loads and loads of vitamins a day. I have seen some peoples vitamin regime and its over 20 a day?

Flatulence - So embarrassing - What sets it off so you can avoid it?

Bowel Movement - I don't want to be on the toilet half my life so need to know what I should be doing to avoid that.

People have asked me why are you thinking of the DS. The way I see it is that I have the Gastric sleeve and have lost 128lbs with it. Nothing has really moved in a year - I am eating badly again and do not want to put on 128lb. I see the DS like a strict teacher - showing me I have no option but to eat the correct food otherwise I will be passing wind and having many BM in a day and feeling very embarrassed and not be able to go out and enjoy my life because I can't keep those two things under control. So if i eat right I can. Don't know if you understand where I'm coming from.

How did it help you? Have I got it right about the food side of things?

Hi Davina!

Ok, let's start with the "diet." DSers need LOTS of healthy fats. I cook everything in real butter, I eat burgers, pizza toppings, etc. It's necessary for me, and all DSers to have high fat, low carb diet. Stay away from foods high in carbs and those filled with sugar. And one of the #1 rules- don't drink your carbs/sugars!

I take the following vitamins, but I get lab work regularly and tweak them as needed. I take two multi vitamins, vitamins A, D, E & K1 separately (dry forms, from Amazon), B12, calcium, magnesium oxide, and a couple of other randoms. There's a PHENOMENAL group of DSers on FB if you'd like to add me, and I'll add you to the group.

Bowel movements and gas are solved over time. You'll learn your trigger foods and you'll most likely learn to avoid them. It's a lot to do with you common channel (cc) size also. Do you have any idea what the length of yours will be? But as for the smell? It's inevitable. I do a "courtesy flush" often and I use Poo-Pourri- it works!!!
