A question regarding bread

Recommended Posts

I was banded 3 weeks ago and have had some bread. I had toast, a piece of pizza, and some wheat bread on a sandwich. I had no problem with it but have not had a fill yet either. Does bread become much harder to eat or impossible after a fill?

The only time I have a problem with bread is if I try to swallow too much at once. Oh, wait - I have that same problem with anything if I swallow too much at once. :rose:

I don't eat a lot of bread because I do try and watch my carbs, with varying degrees of success, but I can eat it as long as I chew to goo. As a matter of fact, I had foccacia with dinner tonight. Mmm.

My expereinces with bread seems to change with any given day. Since my last fill on 8/13, I cannot eat Pizza Crust and breadsticks but I can still eat toast (or anykind of toasted bread on a sub) and most biscuits. I try not to eat too much of those types of food because of the carbs but occasionally I will indulge myself without overdoing it.

I forgot to mention I'm surprised you're eating pizza 3 weeks out. Hope you're chewing very well, although it's been almost 3 years, seems I was still on mushies at that point.

At any rate, good luck on you band journey.

(Pizza, hmmm, I couldn't imagine eating a slice of pizza, maybe stealing the top off a slice, LOL)

I was allowed to eat solids at 3 weeks. I have had no problem getting bread down, but then again, I haven't had my first fill yet.

My doctor said I should be able to eat everything, just in moderation.

I'm with Missy. I ate some thin crust the other night. No problems... I was told I could eat that, well toasted bread and flour tortillas. I chew well and no problems. I am also pre-fill. I get filled on the 9th of October. I guess we'll see then if I can still tolerate. I hope so!

I have had no problem with bread at all. My sister got her band in July. She was never able to eat bread, still can't. But, even before her fill she couldn't get it down. Hopefully it will be that way after my fill as well!

I eat bread regularly and have no trouble with it. Its a "difficult" food in that I need to eat it carefully and it fills me VERY quickly, cant eat a lot of it. But I can eat it and I do believe wholegrain bread is part of a healthy diet.

I woke up yesterday knowing that I was going to treat myself to a slice of pizza. It wasnt as good as I thought it was going to be and to my horror it went down with no problems. I was really hoping that it got stuck. I go for my 3rd fill on the 3rd and Im hoping that he fills me up. Now that my brain knows that it will go down, I can imagine the things its telling my stomach to eat. :omg:

Different people will have different experiences with bread.

Some tolerate it, some don't.

Every time you get a fill you will have to re-learn what YOU can tolerate, and your tolerances will not be the same as anyone else's.

I agree, I have found myself eating more breads since I realized that it goes down so easily! I have realized this is a bad thing! I guess I wish that it was harder to go down! Maybe after my fill that will change or at least restrict me to eat less of it!

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!
