Getting sleeved in 3 days

Recommended Posts

I'm getting the sleeve on Thursday (9/22). I am really excited but I am also nervous. I've read that some people say the pain and nausea are minimal and totally manageable and I've read that others say the pain and nausea are off the charts. How will I most likely feel when I wake up in recovery? The first and second day post op? Just want to mentally prepare myself. Thanks in advance for any input.

When you wake up in recovery you will feel pretty awful. I don't remember a whole lot of it though. I did have some pain but for the first 24 hours but kept the pain meds coming and it definitely helped. What was hard for me is that I had a headache most of the first two days. Probably a result of all the meds I was getting. Anyway that bothered me more than the incisional pain. I did have nausea but it went away with the Zophran they gave me through the IV. Never threw up, just had the rush of Water in my mouth a few times that meant I was close. Once I got home I felt a lot better. Am slightly sore around my healing incisions and not yet sleeping on my stomach, but over all I feel pretty good.

Good luck to you. You can do this.

(I think what started to help me feel even better was seeing that I had lost 8 pounds after only 3 days :) )

I should add that what made me nauseated in the hospital was the Clear liquids they put me on. The sugar free, clear liquid was awful. I was best when just sipping ice Water and then some regular apple juice. I guess my stomach doesn't like the fake taste of some of the sugar free things.

Last night I wrote you a long reply and somehow it poof disappeared.

I'm 2 weeks out and I feel pretty good. However, the first 3-4 days are the worst- discomfort, hunger (whether it's in your head or actual hunger), the crappy liquid diet, and nausea.

Some people have no pain. I needed my pain meds. Some have no nausea. I needed my nausea meds.

Just remember that it's temporary and with every new day, you will feel better!

Follow your dr's diet instructions. Not doing so could result in serious complications.

It's not exactly a day at the beach but you'll get through it and you'll be so glad when you are a week out and the 2,3,4 and so on.

Good luck!

For me, the gas pains were by far the worst. Those had me yelling out loud in pain but went away after a couple days. After about day 3, your abs just feel sore but not unmanageable. Everyone is different. You won't know until you get there but just remember, it is all temporary. The worst of it will be over in about a week and all downhill from there. [emoji3]

Thanks everyone. I'm so nervous about what to expect but your responses help me feel like I have some understanding as to what it might be like and that helps to lessen the anxiety a little. There's no turning back now so I might as well stop fretting - whatever it is is what it will be and I will get through it. See you all on the other side!

The gas pain is by far the worst. The only thing that helps is walking and moving. It goes away after a few days and I found the more I walked the better I felt. I also needed to sleep with my an extra pillow or two - if I was flat then the gas seemed to come in waves and it was really uncomfortable.

Otherwise take all your meds in schedule and the discomfort from the cutting and slicing is minimal. Don't be scared to ask for pain meds. If they give you the self-administered pain button, ask how often you can dose yourself and set reminders on your phone. ;)

Basically, when you're in the hospital stay high.

I was only nausea about 10 mins. Nurse gave me meds in my iv for it and I haven't been nausea since. Did your dr give you meds for it?

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞
