What was YOUR experience

Recommended Posts

I am so nervous about having the gastric sleeve! I am 27 years old and have not had a surgery since I was probably 10 when I had my tonsils taken out!! I am financing the surgery myself and want to know how soon I may have the surgery after my initial consultation. My very first appointment is next Tuesday. I do not take any medication and have no other comorbid condition. I know this is wishful thinking but it would be awesome to have it mid August!! If you were a self pay what was your experience like and how quick did you have your surgery after your initial consultation?

Thanks!!

I was sleeved April 20, 2015 and it was my first surgery ever. I still have my tonsils.

I couldn't have asked for a better experience, recovery, or progress so far.

As to how long until you can schedule surgery, that is going to depend on your surgeon's requirements and how quickly you can get pre-op testing scheduled and the results of those tests.

I wasn't self pay, I did it with insurance in 8 weeks. A business associate used the same doctor and did it in less than a month as self pay.

A lot of how fast you can get to surgery depends on your personal history, how much pre-op testing you need and your availability for testing.

I work for myself and I was able to take every appointment they offered me, and rearrange my schedule around it.

I was self pay. My first appointment with the surgeon was April 24, my surgery was June 12. I was able to schedule it as soon as I had my finances in order. After my consultation, I started the loan process through my credit union. When I had the money, I called and set a date. I didn't have to jump through any of the usual hoops that insurance patients do. I just had the normal pre surgery blood work. I had a liquid diet for either 3-5 days before hand (it's been a long time ago, can't remember exactly.)

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
