1. Exactly HOW bad do the Lovenox injections hurt? My surgeon says we have to inject ourselves for a week post op. Ugggh.

2. Do I really need a blender for pureeing foods in the 2nd week+? If I can get by without one, I'd like to save the money.

1. I only had them in the hospital but the only thing I remember is my stomach being tender because I had to have so many. The nurse seem to hit the same spot

2. I used a mini chopper..($14-20). I couldn't go without one. But with the mini chopper, I use it all the time for other things. Chopping onions for one..(no crying) and chopping nuts and more.

I have a one cup blender I got at target for like 17 bucks. I also have a mini chopper to use.

Why do you have to take Lovenox injections? Are you on blood thinners? I had to take those shots but I'm on a blood thinner. I have to stop my Warfarin 3 or4 days before any surgery but I have to "bridge" myself over with shots & then the day of surgery I go back on my Warfarin & take shots for 3 or 4 days until my Warfarin catches up. These shots sting a little. By the way, these shots are expensive. At least they are pre loaded suringes. Good luck with your surgery. It was a good decision.

You do need some sort of blender to puree your food. I still use mine for smoothies.

The surgeon prescribes it for all his patients to prevent blood clots, that's all I know. Owie.

Lovenox injections are for anyone.......if they were on blood thinners or not. You stopped your blood thinner before surgery and the Lovenox is to provide instantaneous thinning post surgery to help prevent DVTs. Some docs use it, some don't.

I was on Plavix before surgery and Lovenox after for about a week. The injections are very easy to give yourself and pretty quick and painless. Really a non-issue.

No blender just chew 25 times minimum. Soft foods

My surgeon also prescribed them for 10 days, starting on the first full day home. I did them first thing when I woke up just to get it done. I injected the fattiest part of my hip. Somedays it pinched, other days not at all. The area will be very bruised as you are injecting a blood thinner subcutaneously. Oh--and grab some alcohol swabs from the hospital before you're discharged :-)

I am 3 days post op & on lovenox. I have factor lV liden which is a blood clotting gene so to prevent me from clotting I have to inject myself for 30 days. I also did it with my pregnancies. It's not bad. Just squeeze a part of skin on your sides and put the needle in at a 90 degree angle you won't feel anything if done right. Change positions. As for the blender dollar tree or Walmart should have a little chopper for $10.

1. I only had Lovenox injections I. The hospital, but I work for surgeons who do different surgeries and they all do something different. One surgeon has her patients do them twice daily for 28 days after surgery. The shots don't really hurt, just a slight sting from the needle. Don't hesitate or put the needle in slowly. That will make it hurt. Shots should ideally be in the abdomen at least 2 inches out from your belly button and sites should be rotated. Don't massage the area afterward. This is how they did it in the hospital and this was how we were taught in nursing school, but, Disclaimer: follow your discharge instructions

2. My mom gave me a mini-processor she used when she was having jaw problems and had to do puréed food. It was only about $10 at Kroger and has been a lifesaver for me as I'm not doing well with non-puréed foods except for eggs and cheese.

I'm a nurse and have given my share of Lovenox. About 1/2 my patients say it doesn't hurt at all (are you done, I didn't feel a thing) and about 1/2 say it stings like heck. I will say it's important to not stick the exact same spot over and over. They taught us to rotate sites, different side each time and look for a spot that doesn't appear to have been stuck. It does cause a little bruising in a lot of people, which makes it easier to see where not to poke. We were taught to keep the injections to the "love handles" and not toward the center of the stomach, and stick it quick like a dart and it helps it sting a little less.

I've had a DVT and a PE, so have a lot of experience receiving Lovenox injections. It has always been something I dreaded because it feels like burning lava spreading under my skin and I get dinner plate sized black bruises every time. I thought this reaction was normal until my most recent visit with a new hematologist who informed me I must have an allergy to it to have such a reaction. I have an extremely high pain tolerance, but I would cry for a solid hour before every scheduled injection. I'm glad that someone finally listened to what I was saying and figured out I'm not just being a baby. If you have a similar reaction, know that it is not normal and that there is an alternate drug that can be used.
