Has anyone had WLS with hypothyroidism? How is it going with weightloss?

I have had Hashimoto's hypothyroidism for 14 years. I had sleeve surgery back in Oct and I've lost 58 lbs so far. I think I could probably have lost even more already except I have not made time for exercise yet and I unfortunately have found that I can eat anything I want, including all the bad junk that got me there in the first place. I don't think my thyroid disease is affecting my weight loss in any way, but I am due to have it checked again soon anyway.

I have Graves disease.
I had my thyroid destroyed via Radioactive tx, been Hypo thyroid since Dec 2015. On Thyroxine since January 2016.

My surgery had to be postponed when I was hyper thyroid.

Since March 2016 (WLS) I lost total of 9 kg ( approx. 20 pounds),

Seems slow loss, however I did hit the stall couple of weeks ago.

It is normal though,to have stalls, even though they can be frustrating .....

I am interested in thyroid disease weight loss, also.

I had couple of mini binges recently, emotional/head cravings, chocolate made me ill, so had some ice-cream and extra Proteins late at night.

I only started gentle exercises 2 weeks ago.

I see the surgeon Wednesday and hoping to get a surgery date and approved for surgery. I'm concerned about being denied due to hypothyroidism.

I don't know why they would deny you. What is your BMI?

My BMI is high enough. They can deny me because my thyroid levels are not in the normal range, even with medication, which causes weight gain. They can say WLS won't be successful. Hopefully I'm just stressing because of being so close.

When I was Hyper thyroid last year, my surgeon told me that it was too dangerous for me to be operated on, due to the thyroid storm possibility.

I worked with his team Endo ever since then (July 2015)

He told me to come back once my thyroid stabilised.

When I saw him in January 2016, I was severe Hypo then, and he wanted to wait longer, as hypo thyroid that is not stabilised can make the recovery from WLS lot harder.

After 2 months of Thyroxine meds (Levo thyroxine), My labs were finally good, stable, Hallelujah !!!

So, was finally operated on March 8th 2016

I can't see a reason why you may be denied surgery,

unless your blood tests show big differences in your levels.

Are you on thyroid medication?

OK, just saw your reply re thyroid med.

I wonder if your med needs to be adjusted.

I still have my now 6 weekly blood tests to monitor my levels

I actually go for bloodwork tomorrow morning. Hopefully my thyroid will be in the normal range.

Yes, I was like that too prior my surgery date.

Was worried if my blood tests would get better.

It's common for low thyroid to impede weight loss or cause weight gain, but it doesn't necessarily work that way.

They can deny me because my thyroid levels are not in the normal range, even with medication, which causes weight gain. They can say WLS won't be successful.

Have you been working with an endocrinologist? Has your dosage been switched around for four months at a time? My doctor told me it takes about that long to know the result of a change.

After nearly 30 years taking synthroid or L-thyroxine, my numbers went wildly cuckoo a few years ago. My primary referred me to an endocrinologist who changed my dose a couple of times. I've been in the normal range for a decent time now and see him every four months for blood work. We're still tweaking slightly. It's a good thing I like the endocrinologist greatly and we have good conversations about all sorts of things. Otherwise I'd resent having to go in that often.

I hope you get to a good place. It seems unreasonable to me that your medical plan might deny you for the reason you mention, especially since your doctors will submit letters in support.

They will do the surgery as long as you are taking your meds and the blood result comes back that your thyroid is regulated. I have hypothyroid too.

I was on synthroid for a while and it made me extremely emotional, (which is unlike me) and I stopped taking it. My former doctor wouldn't listen to me and uped the dose. I quit going to him and my new doc has me on armor thyroid. It seems to be working, it's just taking time. Every 6 weeks my levels improve.

I am 18 months post op and I also have hypothyroid. My thyroid has been regulated, thankfully, , for years. I switched to armour thyroid about 4 years ago and have had no issues.

Unfortunately, though, I am still not at goal. I've lost a good amount of weight and I'm truly thankful but I would love to lose another 20lbs. I can't help but wonder if my thyroid condition is a factor. I get tested next month and can't wait! I just need to make sure my thyroid condition hasn't gone wonky again. I've read where some people needed to have their dosage adjusted as they lost weight. Mine has never been adjusted

My best friend was recently diagnosed as hyperthyroid and was scheduled for surgery next week, however her endo told her she couldn't have the surgery until they regulated her thyroid level.

Good news today! The surgeon said I'm an excellent candidate! All of my records were submitted to insurance today. Looks like early May! I should get a date Friday or Monday after approval! I'm thinking positive.
