Part time work; taking off for surgery

I know all of those with grown up jobs most likely have an easier time taking leave for surgery. I'm getting my surgery over my Christmas break which is a month long so I feel that'll be a long enough time. But I am wondering what do others do who maybe work retail or other hourly positions?

I have a desk job and was back to work in 4 days. The benefit of retail though is that you can schedule half days if you need to. I was not tired after surgery, but a lot of people are.
