I'm moving closer to having a surgery. I've selected the surgeon I want to go with. He works out of two hospitals. One is St John's Detroit and the other is Grosse Pointe Beaumont. From what I have read, St John's appears to be a center of excellence from the ASMBS and has a dedicated bariatric unit. Grosse Pointe Beaumont is not a center of excellence but I understand that to be because they don't have the volume. It appears that overall as a hospital, Beaumont gets more favorable reviews than St John's but I think some of that has to do with simply location. I'm not sure how to choose which hospital. Why not call the hospitals and ask if they can give you a pre-surgical tour? They are more common in pediatric hospitals, but I don't see why you can do one. You can then use that as an opportunity to see where you will be going/staying, etc... and get more info on how post-op management will be handled. Personally I would lead more towards a dedicated babriatric unit, but Grosse Point might surprised with the ability to give more 1:1 care because of it's smaller size.

St John's is definitely a larger hospital. It's also the default hospital fro emergencies and traumas. The Beaumont is in a wealthy neighborhood and caters to more wealthy patients typically so I would imagine the one on one may be better. My surgeon and my primary physician seem to like both hospitals.

I am a surgical first assist, and have help many surgeons with these procedures. Besides your surgeon, 2nd would be a great anesthesia provider, they are very important in any procedure, but especially this one because they are controlling the tubing that is put into the stomach for your surgeon to mark were he will staple. Next the hospital, look up hospital leap frog scores, it compares hospitals scores for safety, patient care, and infection rates

This is interesting. St John scored an A and Beaumont a B overall. How do I chose an anesthesia provider or how do I know who it is?

An A and B are both good scores so which ever is more convenient for you, your good with either. I always choose the A hospital, its very hard to get an A, so you know it's a excellent hospital.

As far as who is doing your anesthesia, ask the office. You have that right. Then look them up and research them just like u do your surgeon, because they are just as important to your surgery as the surgeon.

I just Googled LeapFrog and Hospitals. Since I looked up the scores, a new ranking has come out and both St John and Grosse Pointe Beaumont dropped to a C. I am going to do a sleeve with Dr Hawasli. My primary care doctor seemed to speak glowingly about him. Two of her staff even had surgery with him and they are thin. He seems pretty accomplished. He's the head of laparoscopic surgery at St John. Just had my first appointment Monday. He seems nice and the staff seems nice. Only criticisms I have read have been wait times. I waited an hour and there was a sign that said wait times could be one to three hours. He's talking a time table of 4-6 weeks. Since my BMI is over 50, the supervised diet is waived. Did a blood test and he is talking about an endoscopy and 2-3 week liquid diet. Says he wants to see patients lose about 10-15 pounds before surgery. Shouldn't be a problem since I lost 5 pounds last week without a liquid diet.

Im going to henry ford. It has thw rating of "center of excellence". I have heard a lot of positive comments about dr. KRAUSE at beaumont, royal oak. I did meet a lady in my nutrition class who works in the bariatric dept. for beaumont, and was having the sleeve done at HF, instead of beaumont bc of the center of excellence accreditation. I found that interesting.

I had my surgery done at St John in Detroit. It was a pretty good experience. I got a private room that was nicer than most hotel rooms I have stayed at. It was really big, had a flat screen TV, two large chairs, and a large private bathroom. I didn't have complications so I really didn't need the nurses much. The one issue was when the IV went dry, the machine would just beep constantly and they were slow to come after I called. One time was 30 minutes. When your trying to rest this constant beeping in your ear is maddening. I was also surprised they didn't have me walk. I walked to the bathroom and that was it. They kept some things on my legs that massaged them to keep the blood flowing.
