Things I didn't expect my first month post-op

Hey guys, I'm only one week out, but I would love to hear from some of you "seasoned sleevers" about things you didn't expect during the first month post-op gastric sleeve? I have already experienced sole unexpected things myself, like not being able to swallow my crushed pain meds, and ending up back in the hospital the day after my release. I think if you guys shared some of your experiences with us, we can be better equipped to handle these situations as they occur. Please share with us...the good, the bad and the ugly lol! Thanks guys ????????????✌????️❤️

I did my training class, orientation thing all day yesterday and was surprised when they told me that I would be discharged after only 1 night and that nausea wasn't going to be that big a deal. They said unlike a lot of other places that do the surgery, they provide a lot of medicine to prevent nausea and to treat it and it's normally not a big deal. I will go in at 11am on Monday, they start the surgery 2 hours later and it takes 45 minutes and I should be in my bed between 4pm and 5pm and they will release me the following day some time after 11am if I can hold down some Protein drink without being sick.

They gave me a ton of liquid pain medicine, pills to take a couple of hours before I go there to coat my stomach and make sure I don't have nausea, capsules that I break into Water and stir up to treat nausea, and some more liquid to treat nausea, and when I get there they will put a patch behind my ear to also help with nausea and it will stay there for 2 days.

Wow that is alot of nausea treatment. I was very fortunate because I haven't experienced it at all other then first waking from anesthesia but I never threw up. Where are you havung your surgery Radar?

My stomach feels so bloated with just the Protein drink that if I drink Water too I can't get all the protein down. To be honest I haven't made it through the 48 ozs of liquid with or without the protein. It takes 20 ozs of protein drink to make my 90 grams, that leaves me 28 additional ozs of liquid to consume the closets I can get is about 28 ozs so when I add water im then not getting all my protein.

Oh wait I am eating broth and Jello do that counts too so maybe I am doing better then I think. Just talking it through here helps!

Closets lmbo sorry I ment closest!

So many things..... I am 5 weeks out today.

1. I didn't realize until the preop diet just how addicted to food I was. By the second day I tore my house apart like a crack head (no offense to crack heads) looking for sugar or bread.

2. I am absolutely terrified of eating at at a restaurant and being overwhelmed at all of the choices. I feel that I would either 1. Not eat and 2. Choose the wrong food.

3. I feel like a toddler learning their alphabet but for me it's about learning 90 percent more about food and making better food choices

4. Lots of people take of two weeks after this surgery. I am not working now so I didn't have to take time off. The surgery was super easy for me and I walked one mile about 3 hours after getting into my room (2 in total) I think that is why I only had gas pains less than 24 hours. Back to the two week thing. I was picking up my 24 lb son on the third day. Very slowly obviously!:) for me the second week was all mental for me. Not sure I could have handled that and the stress of a job.

5. Do yourself a favor and buy expensive socks for when you walk. The cheap ones (Hanes I believe) will help turn your feet into blisters.

6. This is my very first post! Good luck on your surgery. To the others thank you!

My question is it possible to harm your sleeve just swallowing the pills instead of crushing them?

Thank you so much. This is a very helpful post. I love all of the information. My hospital is giving me some sort of compression hose for my legs which are supposed to prevent blood clots. I've heard of other compression stuff to hold your belly together, but when I mentioned it to my RN, she said that's not good and stop believing what I read online.

Radar, I think that RN must be new because you know if it's on the internet it is definitely true! LMAO (did I just make a rhyme there? LOL)

I find it interesting they are telling you to take all these liquid meds just before your surgery when they advise not to have any liquids 12 hours prior. Also I don't think one night is enough, so if you feel you need more time, be vocal about it. I didn't even have protein drink until the end of the day on my day after surgery. I hate the way the healthcare system tries to rush people out, just so we end up right back. But I'm hoping it will be different in your case and you go home feeling fine.

Broth and jello count as liquids also

I've heard of other compression stuff to hold your belly together, but when I mentioned it to my RN, she said that's not good and stop believing what I read online.

I can't speak for that RN but if you have a stomach that hangs, the abdominal binder holds you in so you feel less pain. Just imagine your incision pain with you stomach hanging all willy nilly versus is you have something soft but firm enough to hold your belly up. I think healthcare professionals are cutting so many corners, it's ridiculous!

Two of the women in my post op support group had major complications and had to get additional procedures on the date of surgery to correct them. Could be just chance, but it also could be how doctors are trying to fit so many of us on one day that they feel rushed and make mistakes. Don't get me wrong, by no means am I suggesting I know more than the professionals. But there is absolutely no way that the binder could be bad for you unless it was dirty and caused an infection of some sort why is rare because they are sterile. But definitely follow their suggestions but when they are pressuring you to walk around you will understand exactly what I'm saying. I has to beg for my binder but I ultimately got it.

Tmi but I think applesauce just made me dump out the backdoor...didn't expect that! And it was natural unsweetened ????

I checked in for surgery 0530 - surgery 0630 - checked out same day 230. Overnight stay is not required for sleeve. I'm 6 days post op had my first appt w doctor. I'm 11 lbs down, walking 12k steps a day and feel great !! No pain meds. Stay active, follow your plan and stay positive. Positive mind, positive results ... CW 228, GW 120

I find it interesting they are telling you to take all these liquid meds just before your surgery when they advise not to have any liquids 12 hours prior. They didn't tell me to take the liquid meds before surgery. Those are for after the surgery. Prior to surgery I will take 1 pill with only enough Water as it takes to swallow it. Then they do the surgery 2 hours later. After the surgery they put a patch behind my ear to prevent nausea and have the liquid medicines in case I am still nauseous. They gave me the prescriptions prior to my surgery so I could have them all filled before surgery and I would have the pill I need to take before surgery and they STRESSED I can only have a tiny sip of water.
