Hello to all!

Yesterday I had an EGD done in prep for my Gastric Sleeve which is scheduled for Aug. 19th.

Unfortunately, the doc said I still have food remaining in my stomach and that I would require further testing. I believe he said it would be a timed study after eating eggs. ( I was still pretty whoozy from drugs.) I think he said if I do have a problem with food hanging around too long I could not have a sleeve.

I have tried to call his office several times leaving messages that have not been returned yet....

Has anyone out there had a problem like this? I feel anxious and would love some feed back. I'm sure the doctor will get back to me eventually, but in the mean time any advice or information would mean so much.

An EGD tests. Had to look this one up. It stands for esophagogastroduodenoscopy. I had a RNY and this test was not called out for that procedure. Is it common for a sleeve patient to have and EGD tests done routinely or was there some underlying problem?

This test can be used to uncover the following conditions:

* Celiac disease

* Esophageal rings

* Esophageal varices (swollen veins in the lining of the esophagus caused by liver cirrhosis)

* Esophagitis (lining of the esophagus becomes is inflamed or swollen)

* Gastritis (lining of the stomach and duodenum is inflamed or swollen)

* Gastroesophageal reflux disease (a condition in which food or liquid from the stomach leaks backwards into the esophagus)

* Hiatal hernia (a condition in which part of the stomach sticks up into the chest through an opening in the diaphragm)

* Lower esophageal ring

* Mallory-Weiss syndrome (tear in the esophagus)

* Narrowing of the esophagus

* Tumors or cancer in the esophagus, stomach, or duodenum (first part of small intestine)

* Ulcers - gastric (stomach) or duodenal (small intestine)

This test is generally ordered if you have cirrhosis of the liver or Crohn disease.

I had severe acid reflux which also goes by the name GERD (Gastroesophageal reflux disease) prior to surgery. Individuals with GERD should not have sleeve. That is why I had a RNY gastric bypass. It took care of that condition.

Thank you so much for taking the time to reply to me. I should have stated that for the sleeve many doctors do the EGD to rule out hiatal hernias. If the patient has a hiatal hernia the doc will repair it during the sleeve surgery. So I was prepared to tall about having a hiatal hernia or not.

I was not at all prepared to discuss delayed emptying of my stomach. I can't find details for the delayed emptying test.... doc office has no humans working today....I am a planner and ofcourse want information right now! : )

I have read this forum for months and have never read about anyone having this problem so it has freaked me out!!!!

Never heard of it either.

And I didn't have to have an EGD pre-op.

And my surgeon repaired a hiatal hernia that he identified during surgery.

Sounds like a lot of to-do about nothing.

I had the same situation. I had to have a gastric emptying study shortly after my failed EGD. They didnt find any abnormalities and proceeded with my sleeve as planned.

You have no idea how relieved you just made me feel! If you have time would you please let me know what the study was like? Specifically do I need to miss another WHOLE day of work? Thank you lexiemustand!

They had me eat oatmeal that had something radioactive in it to see how long it stayed in my stomach. Since i was in the middle of my preop liquid diet it was the best dang oatmeal ive ever had in life, lol. After eating the oatmeal, they did a cat scan (i believe) about every hour until it digested (roughly 4 hours). It wasn't bad at all.

Additionally, here's where I think I went wrong before my EGD:

My EGD was scheduled for 5am, the day before I was to start my pre-op diet. I was told to fast after midnight. (Thinking to myself that midnight to 5am isn't a large enough window, but I'm not a doctor and they know best). I gotta do it big since this is my last night of solid food for a while, right? I did it REAL BIG. I'm talking Prime Rib, Caesar salad, and cheesecake big. My "last meal" was at 8pm.

Well - come EGD time - they can't do the procedure because there is food still in my stomach.

Lesson learned - hopefully this helps someone who needs an EGD soon. Don't do what I did!

OMG!!! I ate pizza!!! ....and apparently I don't chew my food well because the doc told me I ate pizza before I even had the chance to say anything, I was soooo embarrassed. I ate at 10 30pm and was scoped at 0800. I feel so much better thank you for your time! By the way...you are doing so awesome! I can't wait to be just like you. : )

What they are looking for is delayed gastric emptying or gastroparesis. This condition is often found in diabetics and is because of neuropathy, like diabetics with their feet and eyes. The stomach nerves get affected and don't work well. This makes your stomach empty slowly.

Hopefully the gastric emptying test will be ok. If you are a diabetic, the better controlled your blood sugar is the better this condition will get. Also eat 5-6 small meals instead of 3 big meals. Good luck

I'm not a diabetic yet....my A1c is 6% and my fasting sugars are 85n - 100. I don't have damage to my vagus nerve as far as I know....what else can I do to be "normal". I have my heart set on the sleeve.
