Pre-Op Constipation

Hi all

My surgery is Monday. I am in my pre-op diet and have not been, um, pooping much. I have never had a problem with constipation before. I'm drinking my fluids and getting my Protein in. No caffeine, carbonated beverages, sugar, starches.

I know my stomach and intestines are supposed to be empty by surgery. Any thoughts as to what to do?

Just so you know . . . this will be a problem after surgery too! ;-)

Likely it's due to the smaller amounts of Fiber you're getting in your diet.

In the tea (or natural foods) section of your grocery store, you can buy Smooth Move tea. (I know, the name is stupid!) It contains senna stimulant laxative, the same ingredient in Senokot. You need to steep the tea bag for about 15 mins before drinking. Sometimes it works faster for me, sometimes it takes several hours. Some people take it before bed and then things are better in the morning.

Good luck to you!!!

My doctor had me take Magnesium Citrate the day before surgery. Worked like a charm! The cherry flavor tasted great - just be sure and chill it. I took it at 2:00 pm the day before. It will clean you out within a few hours. Good luck! :)
