Athletes - Quick Nutrition during long workouts?

Advice on long bike rides? If I do a 15+ bike ride I can feel myself stalling out and running out of energy.. I've seen Gu and other things like that, but are they too sugary?

I don't care for Protein shakes while working out. I prefer Water. The shakes are took thick and chalky..

What about a protein bar? On a long workout like that, some carbs would actually be a good thing.

Before surgery I used Gu, however during a recent 15K I had a few slurps of Gu and felt immediately sick. My stomach isn't a fan of sugar, so that is probably why. Now on long workouts I carry granola with me. The carbs are good for you, there isn't a ton of sugar, and as long as you take a sip or two of Water with it, your mouth doesn't get dry.
