I have been interested in having WLS for years now but couldn't because my employers insurance had a block for it. In April of last year, my husbands insurance kicked in and I switched over. His plan allows it.

After researching different options, I decided that I wanted a sleeve. I finally attend a seminar in November. I left there confident that THIS was the procedure for me.

Last weekend, I scheduled an appt with a Bariatric surgeon. I went into his office gung-ho on getting the sleeve, however the Surgeon recommended that I have something called a DS (Duodenal Switch). I have been researching this procedure and I have to say, I'm not comfortable with things that I have read. My surgeon explains that with my BMI being high, with type 2 diabetes, THIS surgery is most effective for me.

I am scared..

Is there anyone that had this procedure or is having one done that can help me along the way?

I am scheduled to have the DS on December 29th.I had the bypass in 06 but my pouch was not the correct size when the had to stretch it. I ended up only losing 50lbs so I am having a revised bypass with a ds because my bmi is 40 and not good for the bacj surgery I just had

My surgeon wasn't a huge fan of the sleeve, kind of felt like it would end up like the lap band for many. He said that there is a lot of acid reflux afterwards & some other digestive issues. My surgeon did not do the DS only RNY but in his experience the RNY had fewer side effects then the sleeve, plus it can be "fixed" so to speak if you have issues down the road. Where as the sleeve all you have left is all you have left of your stomach.

Thank you both for responding. I haven't been on in a few due to the fact that I've become overwhelmed. I'm Still very unsure about the Duodenal Switch surgery. I'm actually skeptical about surgery completely. I'm afraid that I will have a tremendous Amt of skin .. Not that I am a vain person but I sure as hell don't like needles lol.

Have the bypass. You lose more weight. The sleeve is much less successful. And why have two surgeries when you could have just one?? I would find a different doctor. The ds is for really really big people. 500 pounds plus. So unless you have that much to lose, go with bypass.

The sleeve is for people without much to lose. Only 65% success at five years whole bypass has 85%.

I cannot vouch for the DS whatsoever or really for any of them in a medical way... However I can tell you I have seen many success stories with both sleeve and bypass and heard many of the positives and negatives on both. Do your own research, find out exactly what each does and doesn't do, restrictions on food and beverage and whatnot. Only you can make this decision. I thought I wanted the bypass until I did a personal evaluation side by side and decided the sleeve was a better choice for me. Good luck in whatever you may decide

Hey I just did the RNY on jan 12th I would do it again and again I haven't seen drastic results because I understand it takes time and it's only been one week. I thought about it for 4 years hence even went through the process and chickened out 2 years ago now I wish I would have done it sooner ! ????best of luck !

I was adamant on having the gastric sleeve. I've had 3 friends(coworkers) that has had the sleeve and I've had one friend(coworker) that has the DS done. My coworker that has had the duodenal switch done has lost more weight than the ones that had sleeve. She didn't have any complications. I'm scheduled to have the duodenal switch on February 5. Immediately following my surgery I will come off my diabetic, cholesterol, and blood pressure meds.
