My surgeon requires that my 2 week pre op diet be "Bariatric Advantage". Has anyone used these meal replacements? Please tell me they are tolerable... I tried the Premier Protein today just to try and see if I liked it for post op and I was oh so not impressed, and I usually like those kinds of things, but the chocolate was ICK.

I liked the Bariatric Advantage better than the Atkins Advantage. Tolerable, but I added extra vanilla and a sweetener.

My surgeon requires them as well. They are not bad at all. My surgeon gave me samples. My favorite is the banana and orange cream. We have to buy them from the surgeon for $300 which includes the supply for pre and post op.

I was also told to use bariatric advantage but i have not ordered any. I was just going to use unjury, syntrax or isopure. Does anyone know if this is ok for pre op? i thought they all were about the same. Guess i should call the nutritionist too.

It makes me weary when a doctor pushes a specific brand on you or even sells it himself. You know he is getting kickbacks from the company. It's somewhat similar to when doctors convince you to take the newest medication on the market because the pharmaceutical rep promised them extra cash or a vacation package if they gave lots of samples away. When the drug Celexa was new on the market, I had three doctors (general physicians, pyschiatrist) give me samples and write me a script for it even though I never asked for an antidepressant and said I didn't really want to try anything new that was going to cost me another $40 copay a month.

Anyhow,it is my opinion melodysss, that substitutions like the ones you mentioned, should be okay. However, I would double check with a nutritionist (not the one involved in selling the Bariatric Advantage) or check the nutrition labels yourself and compare. My bariatric clinic gives patients a two and a half page list of Meal Replacement shakes that they recommend. The ones you mentioned are on there. I used Isopure and was happy with the weight loss outcome.

On one last note, the clinic I go to actually make their own dietary supplements for bariatric patients. They strongly suggested it as the only Vitamin I would need a month after surgery. I researched it myself and realized it was actually a good choice. A month supply was actually less than $15. The $300 price tag for the Bariatric Advantage meal replacements sounds quite hefty for just enough for pre op use. Well I guess "require" was the wrong word to use. They just prefer it. And yes I'm sure they get a kickback but that's neither here nor there to me. I know he is a world class surgeon so if that's my only beef with him then it is what it is. It's actual just about $127 for the two weeks. I think someone else said $300 for pre and post op. Hopefully Jan or Feb 2015. I want to try to schedule around one of holidays. It's a good possibility that it won't be until Feb. so I hope to be able to schedule it around the middle of Feb. I used 2% milk but I'm gonna switch to 1% for the surgery .

Thanks WL Warrior. I was at the vitamin store yesterday and they had the ISOPURE drinks in the cooler. They look like gatorade or something. How could that possibly fill you up? Are you talking about the Isopure protein mixes like chocoate and all that? Thanks for the input.

I tried the BA sample pack and found it to be basically undrinkable.

I did, however, like the citrus flavored powdered Vitamins that they offer (little powder packets that mix with Water to make a little drink you have once or twice a day). I used the vitamins every day for the first few weeks after surgery. They were really a lifesaver for me, energy wise and hydration wise.

I still have a whole bunch of the BA Protein shake samples left and have no intention of drinking any of them.

Basically tastes like chocolate milk.

Yes, the powder and ready made bottled Isopure is the same. Isopure contains 50 grams of Protein per 12 ounces. I just mix it with Water. I've never tried the chocolate flavors becaue I didn't like strong flavors like chocolate after the surgery. During my two week pre op diet, I did drink generic chocolate whey Protein shakes from Wal-Mart. After surgery, I didn't like it and found that it wasn't nutrient rich as I would have liked. That's another rare thing with Isopure-it has added Vitamins and minerals. I've had vanilla, peach mango, and strawberry so far. There are many people that don't like the taste of Isopure or can only put up with it for a week or two after surgery.

I had no problem getting my water and protein in after surgery. Here is my drinking schedule I stuck to for two weeks after surgery:

8 AM-10 AM.....12 ounces of Isopure (50 g protein)

10 AM-1PM.....20 ounces water, broth, or sugar free drink

1 PM-3 PM......12 ounces of Isopure (50 g protein)

3PM-6 PM......20 ounces water, broth, or sugar free drink

I usually drank 1 ounce of Fluid from a plastic shot glass (they give them to you at the hospital) every 5-8 minutes. I also ate Jello when I got tired of drinking water. You sort of become a slave to the clock. I always wanted to get a timer that went off every 5 minutes, but did okay without it.

in stocked up on those. .I don't think they will fill us up but it will be a great way to work in protein n fluid in the clear liquid stage.

I get mine Monday. I actually stuck one of the premier choc shakes in the freezer for about two hours. It froze to the point I could use a straw and actually liked. Not sure if that will work for after surgery though.
