Am scheduled for LB surgery May 29....I am 58 years old....surgeon says older people do better.....anyone out there my age who can relate or tell me how they did? Can also reply to tat1too@aol.com. Thanks for any and all advice,,Jan

I've talked with a number of people in our age group, and so far the concensus is that we lose more slowly. I suppose it has something to do with metabolism. Other than that, I know of no difference. I'm really glad I had it done. I'm 57.

I am 54 years old...was banded two weeks and three days before my 54th birthday...I feel great....

I think the main issue when you're older is you have less lean body mass because you tend to lose that as you age. So with good emphasis on building muscle, and plenty of cardio as well, you can lose as well as anyone else.

I think daily activity is key too.

Then again, when you're older often you have less demands on your time from other people - namely kids. You might have the time to cook, shop and exercise that people in their 30's just plain dont have, so you can use that to your advantage.

Hopefully when you're older you're way past silly vanity or imagined bodily flaws etc and love yourself for who you are. I'm only 39 but wouldnt go back to being 20 for anything in the world. I think a good respect for yourself and a realistic vision of what you want to achieve make the process far more successful.

I had surgery just before my 62nd b'day and I have done great....I feel better than I have in 20 years. After having 4 heart stents, being on diabetic meds for 20 years and high blood pressure meds for 30 years, and cholesterol meds for 15 years, I am completely off of ALL OF THEM and my blood work is great!

I have lost faster than most LB'ers but I think it's because I eat by the rules of gastric by-pass patients.....lots of Protein (100 grm/day), low on net carbs (less than 40/day) and no white carbs on any kind ever!, no carbonated drinks, no drinking after meals, and some exercise.

Older patients are generally more compliant than the really young ones.....most of us are doing this for health reasons - in my case it was lose weight or buy a wheelchair - so we have motivation other than what size jeans we wear. And I figure I've tasted every kind of food in the world....I know what bread pudding and pizza taste like, I don't need to sample it again.

Anyhow, best wishes from one older "girl" to another....it's wonderful being 20 years younger than I was a year ago. Go for it!!!!!

My mom has a friend through their Harley Davidson group that had his Lap-Band at age 74, back in January of this year. He did have some issues at first with pneumonia that landed him in the hospital for about a week, but he is all better now. He has lost 40 pounds since January. That's a little more than 13 pounds a month. He has been very happy with his results.

I know that pneumonia is always a concern for older patients, but remember that the sooner you get moving, the better your chances of avoiding this complication. The coughing exercises are supposed to help prevent pneumonia as well. Good luck!:fish:

Jan, I am 57 years of age and I am waiting to be scheduled for lap band. Little nervous, but excited.

Well I am 54 and I am still waiting to lose weight. I follow all the rules, and I only lost when I was on liquids the first 4 weeks. I have an appointment Monday to discuss this with the dr. I know I can't handle anymore fill either.

had the band put in april 30th. one week yesterday. i think i have lost 7 lbs. oh i am 60. i feel good but haven,t been out walking yet. moving around good in the house though. the first week wasn,t too bad with eating, but yesterday i felt like i was starving. i don,t feel any restriction at all .it is strange. we have to remember why we did this and we will win in the end.

Flower, What kind of diet does your doctor have you on for post op?

I found when I added Soup, instead of Protein drinks, I was less hungry.

I was on liquids for 4 weeks!

liquids for first week mushes the second. i see the doctor this monday, then i think i get to eat more. i think i need to keep busy, the dh is out of town fishing for a week but daughter and grandkids came over yesterday to do some jobs for me and i did alot better.
