GOING BACKWARDS?

Hi everyone,

I seem to be going backwards in my meal progression. For the last week I can no longer tolerate any foods that are not either very soft or pureed. I had gotten to the point where I was enjoying broiled fish and chicken along with soft vegetables but as of last Monday they make me nauseous. Has this happened to anyone before? I am stil losing an average of 2-3 pounds per week and I'm still very active walking five miles per day and doing my squats and aerobics. I only have two to three tablespoons of food before my stomach lets me know that that's enough. My concern is whether I am getting enough nutrition in each day. I spoke with my nutritionist and she wants me to make a log of what I eat every time I eat to bring to my appointment next Friday. This morning I prepard 1/2 cup of oatmeal and my Protein shake. I was only able to get down three teaspoons of the oatmeal and I did not finish the 8oz Protein Shake until 1:00. My ability to drink Water has not been effected and I believe that this is keeping me from getting sick. If anyone has any insight into why this is happening or whether you have experienced this before please give me some feedback. All are welcome to respond as I am getting a little worried about what is going on with me, thanks in advance.

It sounds like you may be developing a stricture (where the opening to your new pouch begins to close with scare tissue). This is a very common side effect for the first few months post surgery. One

Hi Msshellg, I'm doing well. I waited to post anything until I saw my surgeon after my NUT said I was doing fine not to worry about eating small amounts of food and feeling satiated. She felt that as

Hello,

My name is Natalie. I had RNY on May 19th.

Upon discharge I was on the puréed diet for three weeks. I was tolerating everything fine, with the exception of milk--so I switched to soy. About two days before the three weeks was up, I was SO SO tired of the puréed foods and bc I figured I was tolerating everything well I would move on to the next phase (despite not having my first follow up... Bad I know)

So I tried baked fish, and a little salad. Everything was sitting well, and I thought great!

Well, starting Monday of this week, I haven't been tolerating hardly anything! It started on Monday when I threw up my salad, about an hour after eating it. On Wednesday, I had a small banana and I almost threw up right before my first exam in my summer course. Yesterday I had a few sips of Water and almost got sick.. Today I was having some Cereal and now am still riding out this bout of nausea.

It is disappointing to feel I am moving backwards, and concerning bc I am not getting the hydration/nutrition I need.

Does this sound like it's part of the "healing process"? Or a possible complication (stricture)?

I feel like I'm gonna see how the weekend goes and call my dr on Monday....

I'm worried about this :/

I think your body may be telling you not so much that you're moving backwards, but moving forwards too quickly. Bear in mind that internal healing is significantly slower than external healing. I would avoid the salad in particular. It's been a while but as I recall, salads were not on the menu for at least three months and possibly six. Many folks also do not tolerate fish or chicken for some time, especially if it's too dry. Strictures are not unheard of at three weeks but probably more common a little further out. You may want to stick with the pureed until the doctor gives you the green light. He/she may even want to move solid food back a little given the difficulties you've had.

This will all likely be in the rear view mirror before you know it and nothing more than a minor bump in the road. That said, it's a good idea to check with your team. That's what they're there for.

Congratulations on your surgery. You're gonna love the new you!!
