So, I'm finally scheduled for the sleeve on April 7th! YAY! However, I'm continuing to research and I'm reading if you have acid reflex before having the sleeve it may not be a good idea to get the sleeve but rather the gastric bypass (RNY)! BOO! I'm so upset I'm sitting at the computer bawling my eyes out! Did anyone have acid reflex before the sleeve? did it get better or did it get worse? My acid reflex has been under control with Prilosec for a few years now but before Prilosec I would have terrible heartburn! I was given an upper GI where I had to drink this stuff and they would take x-rays of my esophagus. The test results had come back that I did show signs of having past heart burn problems. UGH! Wouldn't you think if it were bad enough results my doctor would tell me it wasn't a good idea for the Sleeve? Please, Can someone bring me some relief until I can get a hold of my doctor next week?

I not only had acid reflux, I have Barrett's esophagus which is precancerous changes to the tissue in the esophagus which sometimes results from years of acid reflux. I was only willing to have the sleeve and my doctor was only willing to do bypass because he said the sleeve sometimes makes acid reflux worse while bypass will cure it. He sent me for an endoscopy to review the esophagus and stomach. Because I have polyps in my stomach he agreed to do the sleeve so they can continue to monitor the polyps (which are almost never an issue). Since the surgery I have had to move from an over the counter medication to a prescription (which I might add costs me less), but otherwise no issues.

There is another post on this topic with several replies. See if you can find it on a search. In that post some others have indicated their acid reflux ended after the sleeve and they no longer take medication.

I had heartburn before on occasion and when surgery was done they repaired a hiatal hernia. I get wicked heartburn now if I don't take my prilosec which I always forget to do. It is controllable and will be a focus when I'm closer to goal. I eat a lot of pickles and ginger and drink aloe.
