1st day after liquid diet

My mom had her surgery one week ago today, so she went from clear liquids to adding a protein shake today. She had horrible diarrhea all day from just one shake. Is this normal? She thinks maybe its because she hasn't had anything heavy in over a week, but I've never heard that before. Thanks!

    See if the shake has milk in it as some people become lactose intolerant after surgery.

    The doctor told her to use milk. She's already lactose intolerant so she used lactaid.
