Scared And Second Guessing For First Time

Hey everyone,

I could use a little encouragement. I'm self-pay and have been flying through the process to have the gastric sleeve. I was totally jazzed and not scared at all. Skip to Friday when I meet with the surgeon and he tells me that my BMI is too high for the sleeve and he really suggests the RNY. We discussed it at great length and I KNOW he's right. I KNOW he is. But I'm starting to second guess surgery all together. I'm mostly afraid of complications and death. But I"m also afraid of dying from a heart attack in my 30's due to my weight. So yeah. Just having an off day and need some encouragement.

Also, as a side note.... the Bariatric Advantage pre-op Vitamins are TEARING up my stomach, anyone else?

Hang in there! I trusted my wonderful surgeon to choose what was best for me. Same situation. Young, no major health issues yet but didn't want to die because of my weight. There are many options as far as bariatric vitamins. Buy small amounts and find what suits your stomach. Keeping in mind what works now may not work after surgery and what you can't stand now works great after surgery. Same with protein supplements. I've found my body to be quite contrary!

What is your BMI if you don't mind me asking? My sister had VSG at a BMI of 50 and has lost 110 in 5 months...clearly this is an even faster rate than many RNY patients I've spoken to!

I do know what you mean though. I planned for the sleeve extensively. I found out my insurance won't cover it, and I was shocked and scared to go ahead with bypass. I've researched bypass though and I'm ready for it. I do second guess myself sometimes....but with the bypass, I know I will be more successful in terms of weight loss.

I'm thinking currently BMI of 46. I'm mostly focused on weight loss #'s. I'm at the point now where things will slow down so I need to ramp up my exercise. I work in a warehouse 9 to 10 hours a day on the mid shift. After I get my daughter off to school I get myself ready and head to work. I don't get home until 8:30 or 9 pm and I'm not really motivated to exercise. So I have to quit making excuses and get my but in gear. I'm happy to answer any questions you may have. I've been blessed in that I think my experience has been easy compared to some I've seen here.
