Hi all, my hubs is 6 days post op and he's struggling with exhaustion. Dr said to not wear his apnea machine to sleep because it would blow his stomach out but he's obviously not recharging without it. He's definitely getting his Protein in. Any suggestions? Has anyone else experienced this? Is it normal to be so tired?

My husband and I are six days post op. I had to take a 3 hour nap at 9:30 am yesterday. I am tired. My husband is doing better although he is tired because he can't sleep. I think it's normal.

Did he have a pre-op liquid diet? Because if not, then he may be recovering from surgery while also giving up calories, carbs, caffeine and/or fat which is hard on anybody.

He was on the no/low carb diet for 2 weeks pre op.

I was exhausted for a good 2 weeks post surgery. I am talking sit on the couch, lay in bed don't do anything kind of exhausted. My doctor said that was normal, some people just don't recover very fast. Honestly, I didn't start getting the increased energy that I kept hearing people talk about until 8 weeks out (I am 11 weeks now). In fact I didn't get back to my "old self" until I hit that 8 week mark. I have lost 65 pounds in 11 weeks and haven't used my CPAP machine since surgery. Everyone is different; while some people feel great and energized right after surgery, others, like me, take weeks to feel normal let alone energized. But your husband is still very early out from major surgery so I would venture the exhaustion he is feeling is normal. However, if it continues too long, tell the doctor. There are several vitamin deficiencies that can cause low energy. While the VSG surgery has less risk of long term vitamin deficiencies, for the first few weeks it can be hard to get all the nutrients your body needs. If all else fails and you are seriously worried, call the doctor. That is what they are there for. Mine was very clear about that fact.

Seeing you needing help might make him recover faster. Honestly my husband needed more help then I did (we were sleeved on the same day), and knowing he needed care made me get up and about more than I might have done if not for that.

Its totally normal. I basically slept for the next 4 days after surgery. It will pass. I would make sure he gets his protein and water in. That will help.

There is no way I could of taken care of anybody but myself a week out! So I wouldn't count on his help to much....But the good news is that I was able to take care of myself right after surgery..

So the best thing you can do is set yourself up

For an easier time by making sure before surgery that you have everything you need at home already. I mean everything and a big variety of all liquids because you never know what will and won't work.

Thank you all very much. I'm nervous and scared and seeing him like this isn't helping to get me excited about the procedure tomorrow.

I'm relieved to hear its somewhat normal. He's been doing pretty well for the past 3 days. Today exhaustion hit him pretty hard and he thinks its due to not using the CPAP. Ill talk to the surgeon tomorrow when I go in for surgery and hopefully find relief in his answers.

Oh someone mentioned B12... The surgeons post op instructions said he was to take a children's multi Vitamin with Iron and 1 aspirin.

I read or heard that we were going to need more Vitamins than that. What vitamins are you taking and how soon after surgery did you start them?

My surgeon had me bring my CPAP machine with me when I had my surgery. I used it in recovery and have used it every night since.

We were told vitamins, Omega 3, Biotin, and sublingual b12 about twice a week. We've taken it once, and it did seem to pep us up. Coincidence? I dunno, worth trying.
