Insurance stated band didn't show any malfunction. So I guess vomiting & food getting stuff is not justifiable. I'm so irritated & stuck with this piece of plastic until I can get something done. I plan to appeal. ..any suggestions on how to write the most justifiable reason to get this thing out of me.

Thanks in advance

How does the insurance company know that the band isn't malfunctioning....that's what I would ask

I wonder if your doctors off wrote something up wrong. I would start with them to see what they submitted. Good Luck

I called my advocate but she had left for the day. I did leave a detailed message. Hopefully I can see what's going on & start the denial process immediately.

Thanks for the replies and advice!

I agree with Dannip ... maybe your docture needs to write up something explaining better.

I say keep showing up to the doctors office, urgent care, and ER for the vomiting and choking. Magnify your complaints don't minimize them. Trust me they will recognize its cheaper to take the damm thing out. Also file an appeal with your insurance company and a medical grievance as well with the medical group you belong too.

Thanks for all the advice. I have an appointment next week with surgeons office. I will follow up as much as possible to document a malfunctioned band & file my appeal. I am hoping & praying I can have the revision before this year is over.

If you continue vomitng, your band is likely to eventually slip (as mine did). Then you'll have a medical reason! Just sayin...

I too was also told that there wasn't anything wrong with my band, even though I can't keep a fill in and haven't for several yrs, I tried it a few months ago AGAIN and ended up making an emergency trip on the weekend to get an unfill so I could swallow liquids again. I am so frustrated with this whole situation, I was banded in Mexico in 05 and I had no problems the first yr then all hell broke lose, never did find my sweet spot as they call it!

Have you been scoped? My scope showed esophagitis and gastritis from band issue even though there was nothing wrong with the band. Also even unfilled I kept throwing up all the time and developed terrible acid reflux. With these things my insurance covered due to band rejection. Also the band can slip and go back into place one you are unfilled so they don't catch it. That's what my doc told me at least.

They really can't tell until they look inside. File an appeal with your medical group. Sometimes the squeaky wheel gets the grease.

Yes, I've had an EGD. It showed gastritis. I am going to the surgeon's office next week. Hopefully they will document enough this time to win an appeal. I'm so sick of this band. Can't get a fill because it causes issues & at the same time, I keep gaining my weight back because I need one.

You can appeal more than once and at different levels. Fyi.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!
