CRUD!!! I woke up this morning and can feel that tingling sensation of a cold sore developing on my upper lip. I haven't had one in over a year but used to get them all the time. I have a prescription for Valtrex which usually knocks them right out but not sure if it's ok to take it (I am 6.5 weeks post op) with my new small tummy. Does anyone have experience with this or know the answer? My Dr's office doesn't open for over 2 hours and it's critical to take the medicine as soon as possible to lessen the symptoms of the outbreak.

I am prone to cold sores so I have a prescription for Val Trax. I havent needed it so far, but the tablets are big and I wouldn't have been able to swallow them early on. I also have Zovirax and that is a salve - prescription also. That might be a good alternative.

It doesn't have anything in it that's especially irritating to the stomach... It would just be a matter of if you can handle the size of the tablet. Personally, I could have swallowed one easily just a few weeks after surgery...I started taking my Calcium in tablet form 2 weeks out so a valtrex would have been fine for me... but I can only speak for myself.

Also you can call your pharmacist.. or any pharmacist who is open at this hour and ask if valtrex can be crushed.. I believe it can be crushed.. but I don't want to advise you to do so because I'm not 100% sure.

I hope it's okay to take, I have Valtrax on standby at all times because of cold sores! I get then from stress and an upset stomach. Keep us posted on what the pharmacist says...

If you can find a dentist nearby that uses a laser a lot of times they can do a treatment on the cold sore. The laser destroys the virus. They also help reduce repeat occurrences. I haven't had one since my laser treatment almost 3 years ago. Before that I was getting them every 4-6 months.

I am prone to cold sores or was until 5 years ago when my life was literally changed forever by the discovery of DMSO cream! I was desperate after getting the most hideous cold sore ever (took off work it was so ugly). I tried everything. Even paid to download a PDF book on cold sore treatments.

Google DMSO cream (70/30 ratio in rose scented)- can buy online at any Vitamin shops. It PREVENTS cold sores. When you get the tingle or indication that one is starting, apply DMSO (use clean hands and to clean body surface) to the area where you think the sore is coming and to the base of the spine twice a day.

Thanks all for the great information. A couple of options I've never heard of are the laser and the cream-will look into those. I did end up taking the valtrex but it was too late and the darn thing has erupted but it's not too bad and it's in the corner so it's kinda hidden. Thanks again.

Tell your doctor to prescribe you Zovirax 5mg. It's a cream and if you rub it on your lips at first tingle it won't ever pop up. The best part is that you only need a little so I small tube will last you Forever (depending on how much you break out). My daughter uses it each time she gets a sore.

Believe me......it'll be the best thing you ever gotten from the doc.
