I burp/hiccup when I get full. That's when I know to stop, lest I hiccup another bite straight onto the table.

My surgeon never recommended a PPI. Is there a reason to take one if you're not symptomatic of having too much stomach acid?

Yes, mine gave it to me for 3 months. I am at 3 months and just ran out, I am going to go get more. It makes a huge difference. Also, GasX, strips will help with the gas pains.
