I just went in for my 2 week post op and it was a chatty waiting room. Most people were newly operated on and very happy thus far. There were two "skinny" ladies that started talking and they were 7 and 9 years out. We were all prepared to be excited by their stories, but we were horrified.

Now let me say this up front, they were Bypass patients, but those two had been through the ringer. Stomach perf, intestinal perf, bowel resection, pelvic floor reconstruction, multiple pancreatic surgeries, uncontrolled sugar drops, massive hernias... I mean the list was long and scary.

They were young, like just 30. They didn't experience most of their problems until years after surgery. My doc did not do either of their surgeries, nor did they feel that their surgeons were at fault, just their bodies response to the surgery.

They did not know each other, but both had a really good sense of humor about their situations.

I think if I'd met them the day of my pre op, I would have run like the wind, but I'm hoping this is the exception to the norm, and especially so for the sleeve.

It would benefit those behind us if we all try to keep posting our experiences good or bad, at least once a year, so there's a lot more on here from those further than 2 years out.

Bypass is notorious for major complications and that's why none of us would go near that procedure.

The pelvic floor reconstruction baffles me though so I'll have to ask my friend google for information on that

I think that they may be an exception. Not every bypass patient has post op complications like that. In fact I personally know of someone (Amy) who had it done in 2003 and she has not had a single problem, not even dumping. Of course she could be hiding some problems from me, but she looks great (not sickly). She does have alot of excess skin but that is it. She doesn't complain about anything and eats well.

It is also safe to write that Sleever's may experiences post op complications too. Who knows? I mean in 20+ years we may find out that our bodies actually need the grehlin to assist in post/pre prandial learning abilities and thus we may have a new form of mental illness when we grow old. I hope this doesn't happen but who knows.

I too would have been horrified to hear those ladies offering their experiences, and I agree that so long as many of us check in with our Dr.s every year or so and on these forums we, as patients, can help the medical community and provide more relevant long term data.
