BIG FAT PEOPLE!

  • Popular Post

Did I get your attention??? :P

Ok, curiosity... when I answer posts here, I am always coming from a perspective of a "food addict"

But many times I have people write back...

"But I don't have an addiction to food"

Which I always think to myself YEAH RIGHT!

Don't beat me up I'm being honest!!

What can I say I'm pessimistic, I also laugh when people say they don't eat TO MUCH so they don't understand how the are fat.. I AM FAT BECAUSE I EAT LIKE A PIG (alone mostly)

Today I thought about, "what if I'm wrong?"

I mean...I am me and I am addicted, how do I know how the next person is???

I'm curious as an addicted fat person how is it for those of you who are not addicted?

Oh and on a side note if I am wrong, then I'm also jealous because I would give anything not to have this problem (addiction)

If they aren't addicted why do they allow it to happen? If you didnt eat too much or the wrong things and youre aware you are getting fat.. Why not just stop? If you lost all your weight why turn back

Well I can honestly say I've never had a food addiction or emotional eating issue. But I did have a huge problem that led to weight gain. There was a time when my diabetes was seriously out of control and anyone who is diabetic can tell you that one of the symptoms of uncontrolled diabetes is thirst. Well from the time I would get off work till late night I would drink anything with sugar cause I was so damn thirsty. Root Beer was my best friend and I miss him so much but it's been over a year since I've tasted anything carbonated. Anyway after pretty much starving myself all day about 2 hours before bed, I'd smoke a phatty and then eat a huge dinner. Dinner pretty much consisted of whatever was the quickest. Weekends were different in that sometimes I would eat healthier meals. That's pretty much what my routine was like for about 15 years. Now that I've had surgery I've had to trick myself into eating 5 small portions a day and it's been rough. Yea I've missed some meals mainly because I'm not hungry but I'm sure I will get the hang of this new lifestyle. Thanks for the thread :)

It looks like you are new to surgery! So you quit root beer way before? That must of been a good move if you are diabetic..Did that help your weight Issue at all? I quit diet coke about a year before surgery...

Oh and the "phatty" was that a problem?

Did that help with the diabetes?

One can say you weren't addicted to food but would you say perhaps root beer and "phatties"? Or no?

How the heck did I miss this post yesterday!? Laura' date=' again, Great post!

Since Laura posted this yesterday, I’ve been thinking about a response. It has made me think a lot about addiction and food in terms that I hadn't bisected. I personally don’t feel that I had a food addiction. The main reason I say this is I was chemically dependent for about 15 years. I literally missed the entire decade of the 80’s. I don’t think that I am a food addict because I never have stolen to eat, I’ve never cheated to eat, and I’ve never committed class 1 felonies to eat. I never sat in a room alone, eating hoping that the next cheeseburger would kill me. In my state of dependency I went through all of that. I really don’t have an answer for my obesity other than so many bad choices. I took a look at some pictures when I was a kid; I was skinny then until about the 3rd grade. I don’t know what changed in my world, but from then on I lived my life as the fat kid. I dropped the weight between my Jr. and Sr. year of High School, but then discovered something different, something way more powerful than food. While my weight was pretty good, because I worked some pretty physical jobs, I chased other demons. My addictions had nothing at all to do with food. As the years went by that fat 3rd grader re-appeared and got bigger and bigger. A couple of failed attempts at rehab came in went before I finally was able to get the demons under control. That was 21 years ago, but there isn’t a day that doesn’t go by that I don’t think that I couldn’t go back to that life with a snap of finger. It is something that I live with every day, but am able to keep the demon in its box. When I got my daughters, I decided to again drop the weight. I did it the blunt force way, I ate less and exercised more. I dropped about 60 lbs. and took up running, I also got my diabetes diagnosis the very day I hit my goal weight. Unfortunately going to culinary school and trying to launch a business without any type of support net, brought the weight back. Tapping into my vast knowledge of pharmaceuticals, I discovered Ephedra, specifically a cocktail of Ephedra, Yohimbe and Caffeine, known as the ECY stack. Did I know that it was dangerous? Absolutely, but I also knew it wasn’t the worst thing that I had put in my body and I lived through that so why not this. I dropped 70 pound in about 4 months. It’s kind of ironic that people actually thought that I had surgery. The only person that guessed was my Tae Kwan Do instructor. He was an iron head and pretty much knew the drill. The stress of running a busy café (again without any significant help), working on a master’s degree and a couple of other personal issues along with being a parent and keeping up a house, just flat out took its tool. I didn’t binge it, didn’t sneak food, and didn’t sit at home with a bag of Oreos and a 2 liter. But I ate badly and ate a lot. Portions got out of control, choices sucked. I drank more booze and ate more crap and kept the cycle going. It was only when it started to take a toll on my health that I really started paying attention to what I was doing. That path led me to the sleeve and where I am today. Hopefully, I’m chasing the last of the demons….

I’m John and I AM an addict, but not necessarily a food addict…..

I just want you to know I'm rooting for you!

You're the best, I know you are going to knock it out of the park too!

After reading John's post I have to say I'm not a food addict. I like sweets way to much and would eat them in the place of real food. Because of my fondness of sweets I probably should have gotten the RNY but didn't like the malabsorption issues or the dumping associated with it. I was hoping that I would have a severe adversion to sweets after the surgery - unfortunately I do not. So yes I have a problem!

Should we stop using the word addiction then for our food issues?

I do not think any of us had the common traits of drug addiction as applied to food. That is, to lie, steal, commit felonies etc for food. No, I cannot really associate it in this way. The reason may be that we had a psychological or mental issue with food whereas drug addiction is more of a physical addiction. Now that I put it this way, I agree with bean that perhaps it is an obsession instead of an addiction.

Oh Dr Laura? Please straighten this out for us. Lol.

lol Nice topic. I my friend can not help you with an answer, I am like you ADDICT!! I also do my best work at night alone. On top of addiction I also can throw in emotional eater. I hope those staples they put in me are tight. lol Just kidding . I am hoping once I start to loose weight it will all finally click for me . How is it being a food addict and not being able to eat? Is it getting easier with the sleeve? I hope im one of those people that just dont feel hungry. I can only pray, you have great weightloss so you must be doing ok with it. Btw JUST1GIRL, I am so jealous I have been jumping through hoops taking days off work to still have to wait for May !st for last visit then they have to submit everything .....and then I will get a date, so over this waiting already. Been going on since Dec 4. UGHH

I am SO in the same boat! I am a food addict and I eat when I am board. I also PRAY I am one of those people who does not feel hungry. I also pray I loose the HEAD HUNGER! I have my last NUT visit at the end of this month, THEN they will submit everything. My doctor has become really popular lately, has been is several magazines recently and is getting uber busy. What if I get approved but he can't schedule my surgery for ANOTHER three months or more? I had to wait three whole months for my initial doc visit because he was so booked. By then, I had everything but my last NUT visit done. SIgh...

Fiddleman, my husband totally agrees with you!

Not many all substance a abusers or addicts steal, commit felonies either.. But most addicts do lie, if not to others .. Always to themselves
