Protein Shake

Ok, I'm sure there are about 100+ topics out there on this. I'm on day 1 of Clear liquids before my surgery on 2/22. I have never had Protein shakes before and the one I had today made me gag every sip. I need to hear your recommendations on some great recipes or brands. Again, I'm on the pre op clear liquid diet, so no fruit combinations. Any help would be much appreciated ;)

Thanks All

  • Ok, I am going to give it to you straight: Yes, most of the bariatric Protein drinks are TERRIBLE! But I assure you I have found the one that tastes great! If you have a Sam's Club and/or costco

If you are on clear liquids you shouldn't be drinking premier our any other shakes...they are for full liquid phase. Clear liquids include crystal light, broth, sf popsicle or jello. Unjury products. The clear isopure ready to drink bottles also. I love the grape frost but many people don't like them.

These sound fabulous!! Am I allowed to have these shakes on the post op liquid diet....even with all the fruit blended in? Sorry' date=' it may be a dumb question....I just really want to follow the rules to a T. My dr. Office was closed and now I can't find out before Monday. Also, can I drink Zero Vitamin Water? It's not on the list....but it's see through and sugar free ;)[/quote']

Not two weeks or so post op....liquid only! Too dangerous to push it! I've put a little frozen fruit in mine preop....after liquid phase of post fruit would be delish! I also like to add Greek yogurt ti my shakes....I make mine from tubs. I like isopure unflavored and make my own flavor with coffee, broth, etc....even crystal light

Sort of embarrassing ...anyone know if those premade shakes can be paid for with food stamps? Ebt card.

Yes some of them can.. Ask some one at the store to help you. My mom buys them with her card all the time.

Chocolate Premier! It tastes exactly like chocolate milk!! I love it!

it is truly a matter of personal taste. I tried and ton and the only one I could tolerate was The Optimum 100% Whey Protein (gold standard). It was 24 grams of protein and 3 grams of carbs.

I have no disagreement that all shakes mentioned here are acceptable options. But, lets be honest, how many of times can you drink a shake before you are just sick of it? I occasionally do drink premier Protein, mostly out of convenience. But, they are not the best option, good, but not the best.

I have several go to Protein Drinks. All of which I needed to adjust to, but all of which I love now.

powders?utm_source=BariatricPal&utm_medium=Affiliate&utm_campaign=CommentLink" target="_ad" data-id="1" >unjury chocolate splendor mixed with unsweetened almond milk.

Unjury chicken Soup. I mix it in warm Water then nuke it (keeps it from clumping this way)

Syntax nectar fuzzy navel w/ocean spray Cran/Peach on the go packet. Mixed in 24-33oz of cold water. Very light & refreshing.

Syntax nectar cherry w/ocean spray Cran/Cherry on the go packet. Mixed in 24-33oz of cold water.

Syntax nectar Chocolate Truffle. This is heaven in powdered form. I'll mix it into a small amount of unsweetened soy milk and heat it for some of the best hot cocoa substitute you've ever seen.

These are all Whey Protein Isolates. The best protein you can get. And yes, they are a bit hard on the stomach till you get use to them. But, you can always mix less protein into what you are making till you are use to it too.

I live off of two things: pure Protein frosty chocolate from GNC (35 G protein and like 4 carbs) and NOW whey protein isolate unflavored. I just discovered the NOW and you can even put it in crystal light and not taste it! Also at 25g high quality protein it's awesome.

Ones I tried and didn't like: gnc lean protein (although others swear by it), Isopure, muscle milk.

unjury Protein powder is good too but not as good as NOW in my opinion. Just have to try a bunch and see for yourself!

Good luck!

Thanks ;) Where do you purchase the Now Whey isolate unflavored?

Has anyone tried the diet direct catalog or online? Are there items good?

I keep trying different things and its getting expensive I have surgery in a week and i can't stand anything but 1 drink and I'm tired of it and its about 12 dollars for 4 bottles!

I know just how you feel. I tried EVERY flavor of protein powder that unjury and Suntrax(Nectar) offered and they all made me gag and a few almost made me chuck them right back up.

The day before my surgery I went to see my dietician worried I might have to cancel the surgery because I couldn't stomach the protein drinks when she recommended the Premier Protein Shakes. They saved me. The chocolate is great but I didn't like the vanilla at all, too sickly sweet for me. 5+ weeks post-op and I still have one every day to kick up my protein. They made having this surgery possible for me.

DEFINITELY try them and good luck!
