Am I The Only One?

It seem that a lot of sleevers are in their 30's and 40's. I'm in my 50's and wanted to hear from our age group on healing and just getting around. I know I feel so much better just taking off 27lbs and haven't been sleeved yet. So if you are over 50 and have some input, please share it.

Hello gina, I am 53 and feel the same way and have a lot of the same questions. I hope this group gets going and we can get some answers. I am cleared for surgery and hope to be haveing it sometime in December. I will keep following this group to see if we get any answers. good luck to you.

My name is Tara. I am 53 and my scheduled surgery date is Dec 10th! I start my preop diet on Monday. I am cleaning out my kitchen and my closet this weekend and getting all my ducks in a row at work during the next two weeks so that I will not have to worry about work during my week off! I am determined to be optimistic and only have to take a week off even though I have had several people advise me to take two weeks off. I am the House Supervisor (RN) at our hospital on the night shift, and always have back up help for lifting so that should not be a problem. I have all ofmy menus and supplies (protein) ready. I have worked for this for over 2 years and am determined that I succeed! Good luck to you both and hopefully we can stay in touch! I am in Central Texas. I have not posted my before pictures because they are so bad that I am going to wait for some good "after" pictures to put in at the same time!!

I was so worried that I was too old for all this, but "all this" has made me feel at least 20 years younger, if not more! I was so slow, out of breath, hot, tired and anxious. Now I zip around, never get out of breath, haven't broken a sweat in months and smile all the time! People are always commenting about the change they see in me.

I was so very lucky not to have any complications from the surgery. I was so worried that I would develop a distaste for food, that I would no longer enjoy cooking, that the lifestyle change might affect my wonderful marriage. None of that was true. I am able to eat almost anything I want, just in limited quantities of course, but those quantities are actually greater than I supposed. I only avoid very greasy foods, white soft bread, raw onions and lettuce.

I just put on the biggest Thanksgiving spread ever, for 19, and enjoyed every last minute of it.

And I just spent $3,700 on a complete new wardrobe, including undies, jammies, work clothes, casual clothes, coats, gloves, shoes and jewelry! That hurt the bank account but made quite a few big desposits in my self-esteem account!

My husband, sons, friends and coworkers have been so supportive, I truly love each of them for it.

Be aware that things could possibly go wrong, but be confident that they won't! This is the greatest thing I ever did for myself.

Good luck to all!

I was sleeved on November 5th. I was concerned that I would not lose as much as younger sleevers. But at this point, it doesn't matter. I just need to lose enough to make me healthier. I just need to lose enough to stop or reverse some of the co-morbid conditions I have. I'm not comparing myself to others.

I am 55 and just starting the process now.... I was torn between sleeve and bypass... but I am leaning towards the sleeve .. no rerouting of bowels and it seems, more normal to me... makes more sense at my age.... someone said in another online site that it is irreversible and I should go GP ... but that does not sway me... I still think at 251 lbs. and my age... this is a better choice. I am soooo glad to see this group exists.... I see alot of younger peeps getting the procedure but I often wonder on the recovery rate and success for people my age... thank you for posting your stories and I hope to gain friends for this journey here... :) ann

Hey, there! I'm 53 as of a week ago. Just found out today that insurance approved my surgery so I should be having it before the end of this month. My 22 year old son is having it with me the same day. We started this journey together and he is doing so well. He has already lost over 30 pounds. I haven't tried too hard, I've only lost 5 pounds, but that's ok. We should start the liquid phase in the next day or so and it has to go two weeks. I will post back with a surgery date.

Keep posting!

Glad to be part of this group. I too have left my 20s, 30s and 40s behind. I am 50. I was sleeved 7 months ago. I had a band for a year prior to that, but it slipped. My physician suggested the sleeve and I am glad he did. We not may lose as fast, and don't tone up as quickly, but we have the knowledge and committment behind us. We know that this is for us!

Hi,

I am glad I found your little group. I am also 50 and am planning to have the gastric sleeve. My surgery won't be scheduled until May but I am preparing myself mentally as much as possible. Most of the stories I have read are from people much younger than myself and I ask myself about how it will be for a person who is older. Thank your for starting this group.....

Hello everyone,

I am 52 and right there with all of you wondering how effective this can be at my age, will it work for all of my effort, and so excited all at the same time. Thanks for developing this group and I hope to learn from and contribute to all of you! My surgery will be in early April or May

Hello,

I joined your group yesterday and I was hoping to find out if you had your surgery yet and how you are feeling. I am 50 as well and I in pre-surgery status. I was hoping to get some advice and inside within this group. I would be happy to hear from you.

Susanne

WELCOME! I am almost 8 months out. I had a lap band for a year prior to it slipping. I was sleeved a little less than 3 months later. It is the best thing that I have ever done for myself. I do not regret it at all. I am a fairly slow loser as my bmi was lower when I started. I have lost just shy of 50 pounds since my sleeve and 70 pounds since I began my weight loss surgery process. I feel great, and I am slowly starting to see myself as others see me. I am so glad for this tool! Keeping a positive attitude and always looking forward is one of the best things you can do for yourself. I have also found it important to have some sort of support system. Besides my family and my Bariatric team, I come here for support of my fellow slevers, and I am in Weight Watchers for the weekly support of people who are in this weight loss journey too. Good luck and let us know if we can help in any way.

Thank you for sharing your story. It's good to hear positive remarks about the surgery from people who have passed their 20's.... I will be visiting this site and this group often...

Thanks again,

Neuan

Hi all! I'm 55 years old and was sleeved on Nov. 6, 2012. I lost 45 pounds in the 6 month pre-sleeve diet, and have lost another 51 pounds since I was sleeved 18 weeks ago. My start weight was 285 pounds, and I'm 5"3" tall. I wore a PLUS size 26 W pants, and a PLUS size 3-X tops. I now wear a size 16 regular pants, and a large shirt. I feel so much better, and can do so much more! I have 39 pounds to go, but have hit a stall at 189 pounds for about a week now. They say it's normal, and we all hit stalls. I hope it doesn't last to long. I have lost over 45" all over my body, and all my blood work this passed month was PERFECT! No more high B.P. or meds to take for it, great blood sugar levels, great cholesterol, even my kidneys are working perfect now! My doctor doesn't even know why that is, but she's thrilled about it! LOL No more acid re-flux, and all my joints are feeling better too. For my work outs I do Zumba 2 on our Wii, and I love it! I burn over 600 calories in a 48 minute work out, and it's FUN! :) In the spring, summer, and fall I go for walks with our dogs, and ride my 5 speed cruiser bike with my husband. This will be my first summer in over 25 years to buy, and WEAR a bathing suit. I'm looking forward to summer for a change! It's not always been easy, but it's SO WORTH IT! Kathy :D

Well I made it to 7 weeks post op, the surgery was ok but got an infection and that made my recovery slow. Now I feel pretty good, lost 33 lbs post op, 73 lbs total. Learning what works for me and what doesn't has been a challenge but I'm getting better at this. I will be so glad when spring gets here too, need to move

Unfortunately, sugars have not gotten better. This was so disappointing, see my endo Monday to get a plan of action. Was hoping to not have to get a pancreas bypass, still praying it all works out. No more surgeries would be nice.

May God bless you all!
