Gain 13 Pounds 9 Days Post Op U Gotta Read Why!

Recommended Posts

I was sleeved 10/29 @ 3:00pm. Let me say two weeks prior to surgery I was placed on Protein Drinks for two weeks. Let me also say I have done everything by the book. My pre op weight 351 surgery date weighed 347 (I know not much lost). Surgery went extremely well, removed a herna, stayed in hospital two days, could have gone the day after, I figured I would stay one more night no problem. My doc requires you to stay on Protein Drink 2 1/2 weeks after surgery. No big deal not hungry anyway, no pain, peeing not frequent but i know my kidney is working no pain meds, sip sip sip I go, walking and drinking 64oz of Water ( last three days) feeling good. I began to notice swelling around ankles and thighes when i go to bed they go down.

Well today 11/7 is my first post op doc appt I get on scale "GAINED 13lbs". OK I say to self how could u gain 13 lbs without eating, even before surgery I did not accomplish that and I was eating food. So my doc is saying how great I look etc etc. Then he said how much did u loose? I said NONE I GAIN. Then I said are u sure you did the procedure?? He said yes. He said that I had a lot of fluids during surgery and I keep drinking. So he gave me 10 days of water pills, he also made me get a blood test to check my kidney. I see him again on 11/30. I had tell this story I had not heard it before. I don't weight myself so I had no idea how much I gain, my ankles swelling would happen sometime prior to surgery (not enough to call it normal) . So I was not upset about the weight, because I followed the rules. I know my kidneys are fine and the water pills will remove the excess water. I said thank you God if I had to have a complication, i am glad it was this. Just wanted to share, I feel great and all will be well to b continued. Stay tune for 11/30 update. Give your thoughts.

I will be having my surgery on Nov 13 , and reading your story makes me worried ... for one thing , I had to do the 14 day pre op liquid diet , I am on the 7 th day , and honestly I am much like you ... I have not weight myself because I am doing everything as i should with my liquids , broth Jello and so on .... I admit that with the broth ..I have used the Lipton 50 calorie instant Soup ( has a little noodles in it ) and i have 2 packages a day along with 2 slim fast shakes , Decaf cofee .. but I dont feel as if i have lost a significant amount of weight .... I wanna guess maybe 5 lbs , so far because my pants do feel more comfortable and my jeans a little baggy on the butt area .......... I hear of people losing up to 20 lbs on the pre op ...... I have excerised 2 times this week for 45 minutes each time ..... I don't know what else i could have done .......... God knows i have craved real food and have had such hunger pains. please post and let us know what happens. best luck to you.

Keep up the good work! The weight will come off as the Water comes out of your body. My surgery was 10/29 and I was taking blood pressure medication with a water pill combined and had swelling in my hands and ankles. It has gone down more everyday. Some of the swelling comes back during the day the more I'm on my feet. However I'm not taking the medication and my BP is normal, and Im doing ok with the swelling. Lost 11 pounds the first week! Hang in there!

I lost 30 pounds prior to surgery. I was in the hospital for 2 days and came out 15 pounds heavier than I went in. It took me about a week or so to get that weight off. It was all the fluids and such I got in the hospital that did it.

Chris , thanks for the reply . I really hope that you achieve your goal.

I am worried about the how much weight I will lose before my surgery , only because my Doctor told us at his Info session that he expects his patients to drop 10 - 20 lbs on the pre op , he mentioned that he canceled surgeries for some patients because they did not drop any weight ..... he also explained that the reason for the clear liquid diet was to shrink the liver , I just hope that with the 5 - 7 lbs ,that I feel I have lost , he doesnt cancel my surgery.

If your worried talk to your Doctor. When I started seeing the doctor and dietitian, I weighed 167 after 6 months of dieting and following the rules I went up to 176. My doctors office stated the same thing, that if you didn't lose weight they would cancel the surgery. But after talking to my doctor he was fine and stated he would still do the surgery as long as I didn't gain anymore weight for the next two weeks, he said to stop following the diet though so I did. I lost 1 pound in two weeks LOL and my surgery was performed

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.
