July 18, 201214 yr They will insert it into your tummy through your mouth and it will guide the staple line. Done correctly it assures they wont undersize your tummy, amoung other things. I have read some papers that suggest your doc should measure the length of your stomach before deciding on the diameter bougie they use, but my doc was unaware of it - most are, really.
