Explain liquid diet vs. clear liquid diet

Would anyone please explain a liquid diet? The nutritionist that I talked to last week was telling me that cheese, yogurt, cottage cheese....were all part of a liquid diet. Huh?

I've never heard of anyone counting cheese, yogurt or cottage cheese as liquid (although there are drinkable yogurts). Maybe she meant soft or mushy foods? Clear liquids are ones that don't really stimulate the digestive system much and are see through like Nancy said.

I'm pre-op and drink protein shakes for breakfast. Skim milk, yogurt, protein powder, ground flax seed and frozen strawberries blended up in my Magic Bullet. I drink it through a straw so would that be a liquid (not clear liquid) diet?
