What do I pack for surgery in Mexico?

Recommended Posts

Hi!

I am leaving for Mexico next Saturday, the 25th. My surgery is scheduled for the 27th. I am wondering what are things to pack (must haves). For people that had the surgery, maybe you should tell us things you had and things you wish you would have had. I am especially wondering about sleepwear. What is most comfortable or easiest (lose PJ's or gown) since apparently we will be doing alot of walking the halls.

What is worn in the OR? Just a hospital gown?

I wore the hospital gowns in bed and to surgery. They were enormous and very comfortable.

I brought:

Heating pad (used it under my shoulder for the CO2 pain I had)

Loose-waisted pants that I wore both to and from the hospital

Loose top that I wore to and from the hospital

Bathrobe

Underwear

Socks

Slip-on shoes that I wore to and from

Slip-on slippers

Toothbrush

hair brush

Shampoo and conditioner

Deodorant

Buckwheat neck pillow for plane and to hold against my stomach if I had to cough

Ipod (didn't use it)

Kindle (didn't use it)

Cell phone (didn't use it)

Chapstick (didn't use it)

About $50 U.S. for incidentals (tipped the driver $20, didn't use the rest)

I bought a magazine at the airport for the ride home but I mostly dozed and drank Water.

I was in a hospital for three days so I didn't need a thermometer or stuff like that; the nurses were in my room all the time checking on me.

Thanks! This is a big help. We are going a few days early due to plane fare being cheaper. Will we need to exchange dollars for Peso's?

Also, Kelly, wondering about the tape measure..... ?

If you are going to be there a few days, walking around and shopping, I'd exchange dollars for pesos. I put my before-surgery dinner on a credit card and didn't buy anything while I was there, but some people who had surgery the day before me went shopping for souvenirs and stuff. Pesos are handy for that.

You won't need the tape measure there, sorry! I didn't exchange money but I didn't really do any shopping.

Thank you -- I just copied your list into my own document, made a few changes, and feel much more prepared. I added shirts that button instead of ones that go over my head.

One thing that I used and was so happy to have with me was an extension cord that had three outlets. I plugged it in before my surgery, then I didn't have to bend over to plug my laptop cord or phone charger in. It helped all of my cords reached my bed, which was nice.

I packed pretty light (I think) and though I took nightgowns, pajama pants and pajama shorts, I preferred the pajama pants after surgery.

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
