Water/sippy cup

Ok, I've read on here a few places about it being so hard to get your liquids down after surgery. My question is why? Is it your throat, swollen, stomach swollen....or you just don't want to drink? Does it come back up or what? I drink alot during the day. And thinking that it will take me an hour to drink 4 oz or so is boggling my mind. LOL

I just want to be prepared. What is the mechanics behind this.

Hmmm. I believe the stomach is swollen from surgery. I too had a problem getting in my liquids. Was lucky to get in 30oz a day for that first week.. I used a shot glass 2nd week to keep track of intake and still had to force myself to sip from it during every 15 minutes. Not doing research as well as you beforehand, I also tried to drink cold Water. Room tempature watter or tepid decaf tea was much easier. Adaption is what you need to get through those first couple of weeks. You learn what works and what doesn't. Now I am able to get in 64oz without an issue although I still do not chug down liquids as I used to prior to surgery.

Keep up the great questions - the more you ask, the better prepared you will be.

i just had surgery 4 days ago. suprising my throat didn't hurt from the intubation. i had gas pain so i wasn't interested in drinking. you can feel the fluid going down in your new stomach. I'm still bloated but i find myself able to drink more if it's a small cup (psychologically its not as daunting) and ice cold. i used to like room temperature water before surgery now i find myself not feeling it. I'm on my 2nd sippy cup (each one is 10 oz) for the day and i had a grape popsicle (haven't had one since i was a kid).

i am 5 weeks out (on Monday) and still can not seem to get the required 64 oz in most days! it is really hard to do.

i was a huge drinker pre-op and would have no probelms drinking that much. i don't have issues with liquids at all, but it seems like it takes me forever to get a 20oz bottle of Water in. i drink and drink and it just doesn't go away!!!! it is 11 am and i am just now finishing my first one since 7:30 this am. i seriously think something is wrong with me. i drink and drink it and it is still there!!! UGH!

i usually can only get 3-16.9 oz bottles in a day. no matter how hard i try!

it is just awful!

I think it is great that you are asking these quesions beforehand, just to get prepared... I was hemming and hawing about this surgery for 2yrs, and just decided to go for it 5 days ago. My biggest adjustment was the psychological change.. I underestimated the pre-op 2 week purely liquid diet , and I also underestimated the post-op 2 week purely liquid diet! I am now on Day 6 of the "Phase II" liquid diet, and find it difficult to swallow the mouthfulls like I used to pre-sleeve.

It makes me wonder why I needlessly chugged down liquid for so many years! My first instinct now is still to take a big gulp of water. Then I remember as the water is going down that I should not have. Then a few seconds later I feel this discomfort in my stomach lasting another few seconds. It will really take building some new healthier habits before I get used to the whole thing.

I really did not prepare too much before the surgery , and maybe if I did, I may not have been brave enough to actually do it.

However, I have no regrets and look forward to seeing continuous results..

I wish you the very best :)

  • 2 weeks later...

I took a sippy cup to the hospital but "Nurse Ratchett" took it away from me...she said I would take air in with my liquids and it would cause gas. I did use one when I got home because I just couldn't remember to sip.

I was a huge water drinker before surgery and was nervous about the drinking part as well. The first couple days you take tiny sips. You learn quickly how to sip bc if you gulp you get air and it doesn't feel good. After a week or so you can start drinking more at a time, at least that is what was true for me. Now that I am almost 5 weeks out I daily get in my 64 ounces and usually more. Liquids go down easy for me. I don't gulp them down but I can take a few sips at a time instead of one at a time.

The hardest part for me is not being able to drink while I eat! I hate it. I am so thirsty while I am eating that I don't even feel like taking more than a couple of bites of food. I just want to be done eating so that I can wait 1/2 hour to drink. I have tried to drink a little while I eat but it just didn't feel good when I tried.

I used a one ounce medicine cup and an 8 oz. measuring cup as my "pitcher" so I didn't have to get up and down all the time. I watched the clock. Every 15 minutes I was awake, I finished 1 oz. of Water. With the swelling of my tummy, I could only take tiny sips, but I just kept taking them.

Everyone is different! I prefer liquids cold or hot-not room temperature. And I couldn't stand the artificially sweetened and flavored Jello and Popsicles. I drank water and chicken broth the first day home from the hospital then I added milk (had to switch to soy milk because I developed lactose intolerance) the next day. The chicken flavored powders?utm_source=BariatricPal&utm_medium=Affiliate&utm_campaign=CommentLink" target="_ad" data-id="1" >unjury Protein was the easiest to tolerate in the first few days.

Don't buy too much of any type of drink. Your tastes and tolerances may change after surgery.

Dr Alvarez explains how big the new sleeve is here on youtube...I think it's the 4th and 5th video under Q&A! The 2nd video explains swelling, he uses a little model to show how big this sleeve is with all the swelling.

All his video's are so helpful!
