Does VSG curb carb cravings!

Recommended Posts

I am scheduled to get the VSG on December 8th. Yesterday I had the required appointment with the diatician. She said that I should consider the gastric bipass since I crave carbs. I read that the VSG DOES stop the cravings since the part of the stomache that is removed produces the hormone that promotes cravings. She said that if would be a shame for me to go through this and then still not be able to control my eating.

I would really appreciate any comments from post VSG people. Thanks so much.

I'm nearly 4 months out, at first the I had no cravings for carbs (or anything else really) for the last month or so I do have the ocassional carb craving, the good thing is that with 2 weight watcher's Cookies or a reeses snack (100 cal) the craving goes away and I still lose weight!

5 days PostOp. Honestly I don't crave anything yet. I was at my mother's house yesterday and she had cake sitting on the stove. My head wanted the cake because I used to eat cake. But it wasn't the craving kind of want. I went and sniffed it and the sweet smell was enough. What I crave is being able to chew my food, like the future when I can have toast and cheese and stuff...

You have to do what's right for you.

I really hate when I hear that surgery will cure cravings because cravings are mental, and they're operating on our stomachs, not our brains. Retraining ourselves to avoid carbs, and sugars is really the only thing that keeps the carb monster at bay. Controlling our eating is a choice, and is dictated more by our brains than our stomachs. For example, my neighbor had RNY 7 years ago, she eats junk food, never dumped on sugar, and drinks a 6 pack of Mountain Dew every day of her life. Grant it, she weighs 103lbs, and has kept her weight off, but she's 33 years old, has osteoporosis, has spontaneous fracturing of her spine, is Vitamin D, A and Iron deficient, I know plenty of band and RNY patients that still have cravings, and the only thing that changed my way of thinking about food was realizing that I HAD to get in Protein, and I didn't room for junk food. The loss of hunger obviously helps, but I still have cravings for food. Food "sounds" good, and I try to make the best decision on what I put in my mouth when those cravings hit.

It sure would be a shame to go with any WLS and think it's going to "fix" cravings. Thin people crave food, it's not always the mashed potatoes that make us fat, it's the 4 cups of mashed potatoes that make us fat. I didn't have true cravings until after I was at goal, and started in adding extra calories and carbs. Plus, I can eat twice as much at 18 months out that I could at 2-3 months out so I really have to be mindful of what I eat. I still have to take responsibility, and make the best choice when it comes to what I eat. It's easier to eat junk food, it's easier to slider foods, but I wouldn't make my Protein goal, I could gain weight, and blow all the hard work I put in initially to change my relationship with food, and maintain a healthy weight.

I am 8 weeks out and I crave carbs as much as ever. I will also say that my sister had gastric bypass and she craves carbs as much as ever. Tiffany is right. Cravings are mental and you shouldn't go into this thinking surgery will fix that or you will be very disappointed.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
