Which surgeon? Which surgery?

Recommended Posts

Hi again!

Thank goodness for these boards because I feel like I'm literally starting all over again. I researched WLS 10 years ago, found the Lapband, was able to get it covered by my insurance (after only 5 months of it being FDA approved). I lost about 100 lbs. over the course of 4-5 years. For a variety of reasons including having 2 difficult pregnancies, being on bed rest for 5 months, reflux and a completely unfilled band, I have regained about 70 lbs. In addition, 6 weeks ago I had my port replaced since it had been giving me lots of problems - it was flipped and difficult to access. When I went for my first fill after the surgery the dr. realized that my esophagus is dilated and my stomach is beginning to come up over the band - all bad news. Anyway - he left me unfilled for 8 weeks to see if my band, tummy, etc. will cooperate. In all honestly, I don't care if it does because I've pretty much had it with my band. I loved it for the first 5 or so years, and really appreciated it for the tool that it was. But now I'm so ready to have a procedure where I don't have to have fills, adjustments, PBs, etc.

I do not want the RNY mainly because I know a few people who've had it and have pretty much been able to "eat around" it. I am also severely anemic so the malabsorption would be a problem for me. My doctors are trying to talk me into the RNY or the sleeve, which my insurance will pay for. I am definitely leaning towards the Plication. I've spoken w/ Dr. Rod's Belite team and so far, I like what I've heard. I'm also considering Dr. jaime Ponce de leon and of course, Dr. Corvala. I have lots of experience w/ Dr. C because he has done lots of my millions (j/k) of band adjustments! :)

Anyway - I'm doing so much research I'm starting to become obsessed...

Just wanted to share my story and let you all know I really appreciate your stories and thoughts.

If anyone has had surgery with any of the doctors I mentioned, please let me know how your experience was. Thanks!

Hi!

I am still waiting to find out news about my band. I see my dr. here in Los Angeles on Oct. 18.

Then I can figure out what I'm going to do next. Right now I'm deciding between Dr. Corvala

or Dr. Jose Rodriguez in Tijuana. And I'm trying to save $$ for the procedure ;)

Hope your surgery goes well.

I am in So California so the best options for me are really doctors in Tijuana. Although I did email Dr. Watkins office to find out some info.

Right now I'm leaning toward Dr. Rodriguez or Dr. Corvala.I've seen Dr. Ortiz in TJ before for fills and like him but I think Dr. Corvala is more experienced in plication. My band definitely needs to come out so I will be decidin within the next few weeks.

Please keep your experiences coming!! Thanks!

I had my plication done with Dr. Corvala in July. No problems at all. I've lost 41 lbs so far. I recomment him.

I'm having my gastric plication surgery with Dr. Ariel Ortiz at Obesity Control Center in TJ on Nov. 8th. They will be removing my gastric band at the same time.

Hello SuziM, I am just beginning to research the Plication and think it's the WLS for me! Wanted to congratulate you on you surgery and ask some questions if I may? How did your surgery go? How are you doing since it's almost been a month out? Did you like Dr. Ortiz and his team? How was the facility? I'm asking b/c I don't know if anyone in my area does this procedure, and was on his site yesterday. How did you decide on OCC and Dr. Ortiz? Thanks in advance for answering!

My surgery went well. Had pain for almost three weeks as they had to remove the band first. I guess it took a while to remove. I'm still on soft food but comsumption is way down. Won't be able to see how this really works until I get on regular food. But I think it's going to work really well. Dr. Ortiz and Dr. Martinez and staff are the best in the business. The facility is first class. Honestly. That's why I picked them. Some doctors are cheaper but when it comes to me, I don't do cheaper. I want the best. If you go with Dr. Ortiz you won't be disappointed. Let me know what you decide.

Thanks you so much for responding so quickly! I would really like for Dr. Ortiz to do my surgery, but, it is so far, I live in Kentucky. If anything went wrong what would I do? I don't think I can make myself comfortable with the distance. All my best to you!

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!
