Hi all,

I'm considering VSG and am concerned because I really love spicy foods....can I eat spicy stuff post-surgery do you think, or will it bug my new stomach? Anyone have experiences with this? I would just have to think twice if I can't have a spicy curry again...lol. But seriously, I would love to hear any stories that you might have. Thanks!

Once I was cleared for "real food" at 6 weeks post-op, I really haven't noticed a problem. I had chipotle pork (it was spicy, whoa!!!) for dinner tonight if that says anything. I love spicy Tex-Mex and it hasn't been a problem. :laugh0:

Whew...I'm glad that you say that because Mexican, Thai and Indian foods are my favorite, and I really wasn't ready to completely cut them out of my life. That being said, I also don't need to eat an entire plate like I have been either...thanks for the feedback!

mmmmmm....Thai. Maybe we will have that tomorrow for dinner. That's one of my favorites too. Now I'm hungry.

Hi Andrea, I too love spicy foods, but (and don't listen to me, it's what my doctor told me to do so I'm just sharing) when i was sleeved i was told not to eat anything else other then mild salsa and only 1 tsp of it. .this is because a sleeved tummy gets ulcers quicker then a normal stomach. . .soooooo, i still eat my curry, masalas, and chili powders in my foods, but not habeneros or jalepenos . . .

From what I've read, having the sleeve is like having a normal, but much smaller stomach, so you should be able to eventually eat most things you did before, but just much smaller quantities.

They've know now for a long time that a bacteria causes most kinds of ulcers. Hot peppers inhibit the growth of H. Pylori, the bacteria that causes certain kinds of ulcers.

Spicy foods can irritate an existing ulcer, but they don't cause them.

Spicy foods can inhibit the growth of H. Pylori bacteria, and may help prevent ulcers. I've seen studies of people who eat spicy foods have a lower incidence of peptic ulcers.

Nsaids can also cause ulcers. This is why it's bad for people using the lap-band, and the Roux-En-Y bypass to take them.

Normally the stomach has three defenses against digestive juices: mucus that coats the stomach lining and shields it from stomach acid, the chemical bicarbonate that neutralizes stomach acid, and blood circulation to the stomach lining that aids in cell renewal and repair. NSAIDs hinder all of these protective mechanisms, and with the stomach's defenses down, digestive juices can damage the sensitive stomach lining and cause ulcers.

So I think if you just eat things in moderation, then you should be fine.

I don't do spicy anymore...burb and acid reflux seems to go along with that...

What a 'good choices' when it comes to TexMex after getting sleeved? It is a must have, but and I'm real versatile....so what do you choose? Are chips and salsa a total no no before your meal comes? I'd say they're out!

Okay - I'm almost 6 month outs so take that for what it is - I'm trying to eat normally, just smaller portions. When we go out for TexMex, my husband usually order fajitas and I make a half fajita with a little extra meat. I nibble on a chip or two (or three), but I usually splurge for the margarita and enjoy that rather than many chips. At home, I make tacos, chicken tacos, etc quite often. Sometimes I have a tortilla (half anyway) but often times I just make a mini taco salad and crumble a couple chips on top. Totally satisfies my Tex-Mex craving.

When we order Thai food, I usually get shrimp/chicken pad thai. I eat mostly the meat and nibble on a few noodles.

If you stick with the concept of "Protein first", it's pretty easy. By the time I eat the protein, I'm usually too full and can just have a couple bites of the carbs. My body tends to crave the protein anyway - well that and salads lately for some reason. I hope this helps.

I ate an extremely hot sliced jalape?o with my dinner tonight....it felt so good to eat one again...I have missed them!!!

Wow, that is pretty darn good if you can eat spicy like that. . . used to be able to eat habeneros myself, but i'm really leary now. . . maybe when i'm a few more months out. . . good for you!~

Hey thinoneday, I do eggbeaters (only single serving - 1/4 cup) with a slice of fat free cheese. I am able to eat about 50-75% of it. Much easier on our new tummies than real eggs (and better for us too!)

I eat spicy food all of the time.

We eat out for mexican a few times a month. I make spicy food at home. I have been able to eat jalepeno poppers, sliced jalepenos, and salsa since I was about 4-5 months out.

I've only had one case of breakthrough heartburn, and I think it's because I laid down too soon after eating.

I eat a lot of fajita meat, enchiladas (3/4 of a chicken or cheese enchilda), quesadilla (2 slices out of the 4). I'll have 4-5 tortilla chips with salsa and guacamole. When I eat out Thai food, I also order chicken pad thai medium plus 2. Which is 2 levels from hot on their spicy level. I eat 4 pieces of the chicken or beef, then I take a break, let my body process the meat, and then eat some of the noodles.
