Surgery a week from tomorrow and I am feeling depressed about foods I will no longer be able to eat. Probably more like the quantity. Is that normal? Do the cravings go away eventually? Getting so much pleasure from food for so long I hope I'm able to focus on something else and not be haunted by cravings. Any info anyone can share would be appreciated. Thanks everyone.

Yeah...I hear you. I also wondered what would give me pleasure other than food and how would I be satisfied with such smaller helpings of food I loved. All I can tell you is that if you work the program, the pleasure of getting smaller should outweigh (no pun intended) the pleasure of eating to excess.

I eat almost everything I ate before but in much smaller portions and I'm just getting used to it. There comes a certain satisfaction from not overeating. For me, it feels like I have control over this part of my life and that is a very good feeling.

You are in the mourning stage right now...mourning what you will be losing. But...that will stop and you will hopefully embrace the new life you are just about to start.

Good luck to you...you will do great.

I have to agree with you! This entire time I keep thinking to myself... I need to have a goodbye dinner to all my favorite food, and continued to think.. I don't think I would hae enough time to say goodbye to them.. so I started thinking and asking questions to friends who have had the surgery along with my doctor.. and I chalk it up to this.. there will be foods that I will no longer be able to et, some of them being my favorite and then there is going to be some that I can still eat in moderation. As long as I'm following dotors orders, eating the right portions I can still be happy and satisfied..... I HOPE! hahahaa best wishes to you!!!!! :D

I mourned everything I could get my hands on....I gained about 6 pounds in a month and a half doing it and IT FELT GOOD!!! I am doing my Pre op diet way early. My date is set at 7/11 and I started my diet 6/17. It has not been traumatic at all however I am doing a diet called Sugar Busters and basically I eat eggs, salad, chicken, whole wheat grains and fruit. I like the diet way more than I think I would have like doing a liquid diet before the surgery. Tomorrow at work they are having Olive Garden lasagna....I am a HUGE ( no pun intended) carb o haulic so tomorrow it really going to test my strength and will power!!!! I just needed to tell somebody that...thanks for listening!!!

We all have cravings but your tool when properly filled will help you to eat in smaller quantities. I eat everything I did before but in extreme moderation.

Hang in there, you will still be eating just a lot less

I have done Sugar Busters. I really like that plan. I pretty much follow a similar plan. I am 9 months out and have lost 78 pounds. I sm about 5 pounds from my personal goal. I have never felt better. I too love carbs. I won't lie that was hard. But feeling this great is so awesome i believe you will be do glad you did this!! Good luck to you!

you can eat whatever you want...the band will only help you eat less (with proper restriction)...it is up to the person to decided to eat better foods besides junk food...its not a diet.....just better options....baked vs fried, fresh vs boxed and veggies/fruit.....dont mourn anything......welcome a better life for your self with change..is how i see it.......

For me the depression would come and go. While I was losing I was on top of the world but when you hit goal and don't have that natural 'high' I definitely suffered from food withdrawal. I decided to go to therapy and found that food was a coping mechanism that I had developed. I had always told myself that I just liked to eat too much but it was deeper than that. Honestly, I think therapy should be mandatory with any weight loss surgery as I think we can all benefit from it but that's just my opinion. Just know you are not alone and you can always get help.

I started therapy about four weeks ago, my surgery is a little over a week away. I'm definitely in the mourning phase of food. I'm so sad about not being able to eat and I'm only on day 3 of my pre-op. That being said, I agree 110% that therapy should be a requirement...we all need to understand our reliance on food and how we cope. I know I have an addiction and I've had to face it head on this week.

All of you who posted above, mourning food is normal. I'm with you right now. Keep persisting on and you will get there!

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!
