Can loosing weight to fast cause your band to slip?

Any thoughts?

Nope. Your band is sutured to your stomach and it is rather snug too. The worse rapid loss can do is make it suddenly too loose and need another fill.

I've lost weight very fast- 200 pounds in 15 months. There's no risk of slips from weight loss speed.

One of the long-term complications of lapband surgery is called“Lapband slippage” and can be defined as “when the Lapband and the stomach pouch are both prolapsed.” This means that the lap band has shifted position and the enlarged stomach pouch has also shifted or twisted so that food does not go through thelapbandinto the rest of the stomach. This may result in pain, discomfort, decreased appetite and inability to eat or drink, and vomiting. Lapband Slippage does not happen immediately but may take several months to develop.

LapBand Slippage generally develops in a progressive manner. As food intake is increased, the stomach begins to stretch and grow and the patient may stop losing weight or start to regain weight. At this point, patients may only exhibit an enlarged stomach Lapband pouch. This can be medically treated by deflating the lapband to release pressure and slow the growth of the pouch (successful in 70% of cases, or surgical treatment can be considered). However, if the enlarged lapband pouch continues to grow, the lapband progressively rotates until both the lapband and the enlarged pouch become prolapsed, resulting in Lapbandslippage. This is followed by functional stenosis (narrowing) of the stomach.

Risk factors or causes of lapband slippage include surgical technique, model of the lapband used, early consumption of solid foods, early inflation or filling of the band, consumption of carbonated or sparkling beverages, and frequent vomiting.

How Do I Prevent LapBand Slippage?

In order to decrease the risk of developing lapband slippage, it is important to follow the recommended diet following surgery and to avoid introducing solid foods too early. In addition, the fills should not be started before 6 weeks post-operatively and these Lapband fills should be very gradual. We also recommend that fills should be done under fluoroscopy, even if you are asymptomatic (no symptoms of lapband slippage), to be able to monitor the position of the lapband, and the size of the stomach pouch and condition of the esophagus. This will allow for early diagnosis of an enlarged stomach pouch or possible lapband slippage.

In my case I got the flu and threw up a few time which cause the stoma to come up throught the band and fell over blocking the enterance so he deflated it for 3 wks and a slow fill process starts again.

well.... This is all good to know. I thought my Jealousy was blinding my judgment and needed to go seek medical help.

i sure hope my "friend" that i was chatting with this am is reading all this.... i think it could really help her make her choice to get re-banded or the sleeve... after she researches what the "sleeve" is....

I'm going to throw my $.02 in here...a very loose band is more susceptible to slipping according to my band doctor. At my last Esophogram a couple of weeks ago, as the barium literally dumped into my stomach, the band was just bobbing around, up and down as the fluid settled down. The radiologist and PA were both concerned that under certain circumstances, my lower stomach could prolapse up through the loose band and get caught. When I had a complete unfill last June, I was also warned that loose bands are more easily slipped. I don't believe it's a huge risk, but just thought I'd share.

I see my dr for my 10 month follow on Tuesday. I will just ask him. stay tuned...and bay, keep jealousy in tact please madam....

My doctor said absolutely not. I asked back in August after unfill for surgery.

Ok, so let me fill you guys in. So you all know me as a straight talking person. I say what i believe. I make no apologizes for the most part, but sometimes i do go to the extreme and when i do, i am quick to apologize.

So this am i got to work at 7am and made two pots of coffee for the office. I do this because i'm first here and i LOVE coffee. Then i check emails, FB and LBT. Sometimes i check to see who is in Chat.

This morning i check chat and a female was in there... so i said hello. went something like this. she posted that she had lost 130lbs and that she had to get her band removed because of a slip. She wanted to know if anyone would go back to band or get sleeve instead. so i said that i would go with the sleeve. she asked Why.... I said because i was at the weight i felt good at and would not want to risk slip again.. if it did happen. So i asked her how did her band slip... she said from losing weight too fast.... I said Really.. never heard of that. She said, well what did you hear that makes a band slip... I said what CG said... pretty much... Throwing up and sometimes hernia... etc..... She said, Well i have NEVER gotten sick and i don't have a hernia.... i said... well if that's what your doctor said... then ok...... She then freaked out on me and said that she was finished with this conversation and that jealousy was a sickness and i need to seek medical help....

and then she ran out like a dog with it's tail between her leg before i got to respond..... REALLY.....
